No surprise here. The league gets to charge more money for TV rights to broadcast playoff games and they get more gate and merchandise revenue for hosting more playoff games (not this year, obviously). So they get to make more money, a lot of it, without having to pay the players any more money. The players should be fine with it because they'll get more chances to win the WS, though it will increase the "crapshoot" factor. Even a shitty team like the Mets or Nationals, nobody wants to face deGrom or Scherzer in an abbreviated early series.
For the fan, this makes the regular season as meaningless as the NHL and NBA regular season and will make meaningful Trade Deadline moves largely a thing of the past. Any team within a few games of .500 will realistically be in striking distance of the playoffs so they'll be less likely to dump players. This year, there were really only a couple of teams that were legit out of it at the deadline.

Knew this would happen. Manfred and the owners have wanted to do this for years but a few traditionalists held them back. One and three game playoff series cheapen the playoffs. All these owners who are drooling over the new money will change their tune when their 106 win team that's set up (and overpaid for) gets bounced from the playoffs by some shitty 80-82 team.
Manfred and Co. are killing baseball more than any past incompetency. Cheapening the playoffs, gutting the minors, feuding with the Player's union. The game was doing very well. Yeah, it's a guppy compared to the NFL shark. Yeah, the NBA is gaining. But the teams were reaping zillions of cheap cash from TV. The TV money could have really done good for the game. But, instead of reaching out to younger fans by marketing stars, all they did was cash checks. I've read a couple articles that say that young Latino kids are moving to basketball over baseball. The Latin America talent pipeline dries up, it will be the end of the game. African Americans don't play anymore. Baseball can't survive on white talent alone.

If Mike Trout, a truly generational talent, walked down the street, what percentage of people would recognize him? What percentage of kids? How about Lonzo Ball, a do nothing with a dance mom for a dad? I’d bet my mortgage that Ball would be more recognizable. For that I blame the “leadership” of MLB.

A good deal of the NBA's success has been the marketing of its stars. From Bird and Magic through Jordan and Kobe to LeBron. As shameless as LeBron's "The Decision" was, it was a beautiful move for LBJ, the Miami Heat and the NBA. I bet more kids know more about Zion Williamson and Ja Morant than Mike Trout. Yeah, the big stars in baseball now are wallpaper. Trout, Jacob deGrom, Aaron Judge. But some stars could be turned into media giants. Baseball should try to turn young talent like Ronald Acuna, Justin Bieber, and others into household names. And there are stars with personality. What's wrong with Mookie Betts? Back in the day, kids could tell you Mickey Mantle's hat size and Sandy Koufax's favorite color. Now hey wouldn't know Gerrit Cole if they were peeing in their legs

It's so painfully true and your other post is spot on. Decisions governed by wholly short-term thinking and basically trying to take something that is successful, cash it out and let the next generation figure out how to pay for it and right the mistakes.

Decisions governed by wholly short-term thinking and basically trying to take something that is successful, cash it out and let the next generation figure out how to pay for it and right the mistakes. The gutting of the minors are incredibly short sighted. the knee jerk reaction is "who gives a fuck about the Batavia Muckdogs, Erie Seawolves or Buffalo Bisons?". But the kid who goes to Muckdog games today could very well be the Miami Marlins fan of tomorrow. "Hey, I remember Joe Blow in Batavia now he's hitting .350 in Miami!" The minor-major system had worked well since the 20's. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. The minor have been doing well, attendance wise (not like the late 80's bubble but good) and Manfred wants to kill it just because of the geographical flaws, no AAA in the Midwest, no AA in the west. And teams aren't cashing the free TV money from MiLB. Once again, short sighted.

Not a fan. You can not have a 162 game season and then have more than a third of your teams in the post season, let alone more than half. Absolutely ridiculous.

*Yawn* I can see myself just following the regular season for a few years before giving up on MLB entirely.

Seen more talk about this. Some "experts" laud this as great for teams that "don't have the resources that the Yankees and Dodgers have". Bullshit. It rewards do nothing owners and encourage them to do less. You hope your team is good enough to get a playoff berth bu know the WS is out. A bunch of Minnesota Twins, in other words (pains me to say this, I love the Twins). For the most part, the extra dollars won't go into positive moves but into a shitty free agent or a down payment on a new yacht.
Mark my words, the league allowing teams to trade draft picks is coming, Why, it's he one dopey move left to make. Shit teams will trade #1's to avoid paying big bonuses. And trade them to the supposed "deep pocket" teams. Yanks, Dodgers, Red Sox will have half of the 1st round and their AAA teams will be able to kick he shit out of the Pirates and Royals of the world.

Chop the regular season back to a nice round 100 and then maybe expand the playoff format. It's stupid to have that many games and even without a pandemic going, 2/3rds of the stadium are empty with a bunch of yo yo's sitting behind home plate, looking bored as shit and farting around on their smartphones.
Cut back on games, increase your attendance at each game.

No owner will ever cut out 32 home dates. There's nothing wrong with the 162 game season as we can see now with this ridiculous 60 game mess.

Exactly, plus a reduction in the length of the season would result in a pro rated reduction in player salaries so the union would chug gallons of molten lead before even considering such a thing.

So does this mean the World Series will end about a week or so before Black Friday?
Eventually, it will lead into December (with best of 3 becoming best of 5, then best of 7?), with an 8-12 week off-season by say, 2050?

I don't think that MLB wants o push the playoff into November. They got a lot of flak in 2008 when Philly got a lot of snow. So they'll start the season earlier. Guess baseball in he snow goes down better in March.
One of my biggest bugs with the NBA is the meaningless regular season. Yeah, yeah, many think baseball's regular season is meaningless. Bu you can find a great pitching matchup nearly every day.
