After reading on CB about The Secret Garden and that there was a TV series about as the title says a secret locked garden in the mid-1970 from British television. Since it never mentions anything about clocks striking more than twelve at midnight, it must be something else I was remembering.
I remember another British television series from the I think mid 1970's that also had a secret garden. Think it was over growned. Think it was a girl living with some stubborn aunt or uncle with a locked door to a garden, the girl was wakened with a clock's 12 strokes then came a 13th, she walks down the stairs opens the door to a locked garden an meets a boy there, and they start sending messages 100 years apart. Do this ring any bell at all?

That's where I got it wrong, it was a boy! not a girl! no wonder my searches failed. Thanks Catman

Orwell's 1984 opens with a clock striking thirteen. A possible inspiration for the above film?

Young Frankenstein also has a clock striking 13. This happens towards the beginning.
