My least favorite is The Evil Dead, because the comedy feels unintentional and the Ash character isn't very unique in this movie. He is just another one of the characters. The movie is mostly effective though due in large part to Sam Raimi's unique vision and it is often genuinely creepy. Even though there is some camp in the original, it really can't be characterised as a comedy in any way. It's basically a straight splatter film with incidental campiness. I love the atmosphere. Such a creepy little fright-flick. But there's no denying that Ash is far less of a 'character' at this stage. Here, he's little more than the Evil Dead equivalent of the Final Girl (or Guy in this instance). The comedy is unintentional and the movie is campy, but the fact that I laugh out loud more than a couple times takes away from the creepiness of what the movie is trying to do. I consider it an accidental horror comedy in some ways imo.

The ominous atmosphere that was present from the first frame always kept me creeped out. That's absent from Evil Dead II, which is a large part of the reason why I'm less of a fan. By the way, how do you feel about the 2013 remake?

Evil Dead (2013) is well produced uninspired mediocre storytelling. I think it is quite boring and misses everything that makes the original effective. There is nothing creepy or scary or fun about the remake.

I'm planning to re-watch the OT next month. I have only seen the original once, so my opinion could certainly change.

That and all 3 seasons of Ash Vs Evil Dead - which I've only seen one-third of to date.

Based on what I've seen to date, I would strongly recommend it. I have seen My Name is Bruce. It was many years ago now, so I don't remember it all that well. I do know that I enjoyed it, however.

I consider it an accidental horror comedy in some ways imo. I found this film scary when I first saw it in the early 80's. It was made with a lot of integrity, talent and skill considering what they were working with and while bordering on schlock cinema, I feel it manages to worm its way out of this tacky stigmata It is was definitely made with the notion of being a serious horror film, but I wouldn't call it campy. It doesn't appear that self-conscious about being tongue in cheek, nor parody (it was too original in presentation), like the silly sequels which I really don't like at all. I loved the serious reboot. Cheesy would have been the better word. I am really not interested in talking about this anymore though. It is what it is. I respect your opinion and I am not dismissing it btw, I just don't and can't agree.

Yes, cheesy would be more fitting in hindsight. Many horror films from the 80's have lost a lot of impact due to the myriad of hybrids and clones that have replicated what was once an original time in cinema. I had seen the '80s originals before I saw the hybrids. '80s horror movies is what I grew up on, though I happened to not see The Evil Dead trilogy until I was 19.

For a such a low budget, it is rather well directed. Great use of sound, effective Cinematography (love those POV shots).
THE EVIL DEAD is simply a masterpiece. Greatest and most frightening horror movie ever filmed in history. Also, there's NO comedy in it, at all. Not even "unintentional". Maybe someone watched a different movie.
Since the "Ash vs Evil Dead" TV series changed the game forever, I conceived, elaborated and wrote a NEW "definitive" Evil Dead universe timeline rolling the 3 movies and the TV series into one single, cohesive "continuity".
No more discrepancies or incongruences, I swear.
Have a good read:

I do know that I enjoyed it, however. I just re-watched The Evil Dead and the main part that is unintentionally hilarious is the Shelley possession scene. I mostly feel the same way about the movie I did the first time I watched it, though I like it a little better this time. Some of it is creepy (the mocking part mainly), but much of it is just silly. I mean that in a good way though. This is why I like the second better, because it embraces the silliness and in this case we know it is meant to be silly. The best stuff in The Evil Dead is in last act when it is entirely focused on Ash and all the crazy stuff that is happening. The horror gets a lot more interesting during those scenes with the blood leaking in the pipes and light bulbs and when the projector turns on and the record player starts playing. The stop motion animation stuff when he throws the book into the fire is great. The movie does have great atmosphere though and a great sense of isolation and that works very well in it's favor obviously.
