I had to go to the doctor yesterday with pain shooting down my leg and making my leg and toes tingling and numb and in a Lot of pain when I stand, some pain when I sit and some pain even when I lay down. got a shot at the doctor and some anti neural pain and anti inflammations drugs and now in bed day two with ice and heat packs and still fair amount of pain. Any tips or advice from experience?
(Was told not to do stretching now for a few days while its in the acute phase)
Thank you. It hurts like a bitch I must say, when I stand up or move my lower back “wrong”.

Most I probably ever had was a pinched nerve. I work a standing job so occasionally, a fingertip or two would get that prickly feeling like it was asleep but it would vanish in a day or two.

Catman was diagnosed with piriformis syndrome, which has similar symptoms. Pain killers did nothing to help, but a couple months of physical therapy did the trick. Not that the pain has completely gone away, but it's minimal these days as long as Catman keeps up with his exercises.

It hurts like a bitch I must say, when I stand up or move my lower back “wrong”. Depends on the cause of the sciatica. Nerve pain generally isn't treated with traditional pain meds, but with medications specifically designed for that, such as gabapentin. Most often it can be the result from a sudden strain where you've "pinched" something. Like Catman mentioned, your piriformis can squeeze the nerve, or sometimes it can be pinched within the vertebral column. It does suck, but it sounds like it's transient, yes?

I know people who found relief with physical therapy and chiropractic care.

So how did u handle the most acute phase? I just spent 30 minites screaming/crying into my pillow. I am wondering if theres a better solution...

Ugh. The part of the disc that is putting pressure on your spine should eventually shrink back a bit. If the gabapentin isn't doing anything Lyrica is like its stronger cousin. You could ask your doctor about it if things don't improve. Sometimes a muscle relaxer can help too, but that prednisone should start giving you some relief. *Hugs* Back pain sucks

I know how extreme this can be, especially when it first strikes. How long have you had it? Everyone is different. Gaba is generally a very reliable med but it takes some time to reach a therapeutic level in your bloodstream. Your doc may want to gently increase your dose bit by bit (that's normal). Again, depending on the cause, every body heals differently, but you're on two very good medications that should help you if you can get through the initial phase. Do you have someone who can help you with the basics so you're not having to stand or sit (that's usually what aggravates sciatica)?

Extending your leg while sitting and slowly flexing your foot back and forth, and leaning forward as far as you can without falling over might relieve pain somewhat. You might also try lying on your back, lifting your leg straight up, and slowly flexing your foot back and forth. Then there's always cursing. Oddly enough, that really does seem to provide some immediately pain relief.

Yes my doctor also mentioned Lyrica as a possibility so thats on the table as well. Is there any particular muscle relaxant you would recommend I ask for?

There are so many, your doctor will know what's best for you because he/she knows your individual case. Don't get discouraged! There are so many treatment options out there, just keep communicating with your provider. How long have you been taking the prednisone?
