They're reportedly focusing more on their television properties.

I'm going to try to manifest a Sulu spinoff film with Jon Cho.

I don't think Paramount will ever completely stop making Star Trek films. There is no way a studio would ever completely stop a franchise it owns from turning some kind of profit. I think right now Paramount will just let TV handle Star Trek until it can come up with a way to make a movie from it again in the future.

They could do anything now with the films.
A Remake of Next Generation ?
A Force Awakens type sequel series about Kirk's kid and Spock and Uhura' kid ?
A completely new woke cast having new woke adventures ?
Anything.

I remember the fan backlash to that first teaser trailer and honestly, I thought they overreacted. Like it was Battlefield Earth or something.

At least a trilogy was made. I remember, before part 3 came out, wondering if they would at least get to that point.

Well that's unfortunate.
TEXT:
Pegg opened about how current circumstances like COVID have continued to hinder the franchise’s future, saying:
I don't know much. I've met Matt briefly and seems like a great guy. I love the work he did on WandaVision. It's always waiting with these things, because the world is an uncertain place. COVID's thrown everything into a spin. There's so many factors that have to align in order for these things to happen. I'm just quietly waiting for news basically. And I texted J.J. the other day and said, 'Tell me what's happening.' He's just like, 'We're waiting for news.' I'd love to see more adventures in the Kelvin universe. Obviously, any chance I get to work with those actors is... I'll leap at it, albeit it's going to be a little sad this time, but stay tuned.
According to Simon Pegg, J.J. Abrams hasn’t heard any news either on the sequel’s status. That’s a big deal, as Abrams has been steering the beloved franchise since the reboot premiered in 2009. So it appears Paramount Pictures has put the film series on hold for now.

Oh well the new Star Trek reboot films got worse as they went on. However, it wasn't all bad. For all the shit I give Jar Jar Abrams, he did a masterful job at casting for Star Trek 2009. Pine was born to play Kirk, Quinto was great as Spock , ditto on the casting of Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, John Cho, Anton Yelchin (I miss the heck out of him. RIP ), Bruce Underwood , Eric Bana as Nero and of course the always reliable Karl Urban as Bones. The chemistry between all the cast in the 2009 reboot was really entertaining and fun to watch. (IMO the Star Trek cast is way superior to the lackluster new cast in Abrams' Star Wars sequels)

Chris Pine on the status: "I don't know anything," Pine admitted. "In Star Trek land, the actors are usually the last people to find out anything. I know costume designers that have read scripts before the actors... I would say it's frustrating. "It doesn't really foster the greatest sense of partnership, but it's how it's always been. I love the character. I love the people. I love the franchise. But to try to change the system in which things are created—I just can't do it. I don't have the energy."

comicbook.com/startrek/news/star-trek-4-chris-pine-frustrated-no-plans-bad-timing-franchise/I feel a bit bad for Pine. He hasn't been in a successful franchise, or a really culturally big movie. His signature role is Kirk in 3 pretty average Star Trek movies. His career is dangerously close to being completely wasted. At least Hemsworth will always have Thor.

In interviews for D&D, Pine said he's played Kirk three times and hopes to play him for a long time going forward. Shatner got to play the role for what, 30ish years? The cast all want to come back, fans want a sequel. I don't see Paramount dropping this. Just think they are being more careful about it than they had previously been.
