Better then I expected first-time views; Bloodstone: Subspecies II (1994) Bloodlust: Subspecies III (1994) Definite improvement over the original Subspecies, which I didn’t care for. So the sequels came as a surprise. Way better paced, and acted. The Romanian locations really work in its favour.
The Gore Gore Girls (1972) A Taste of Blood (1967) HG Lewis’ horror output is really growing on me. The Gore Gore Girls had a fun lead performance which might carry the film. While A Taste of Blood had a solid story, but I just find the film too long.
Best 5 re-watches; 1.Candyman (1992) 2.The Fly (1986) 3.Ghostwatch (1992) 4.Brain Damage (1988) 5.The Woman in Black (1989)
Worst 5 First-Time Views; 1.Curse of the Headless Horseman (1972) 2.Devil Girl From Mars (1954) 3.Blind Beast vs. Killer Dwarf (2001) 4.Deadline (2009) 5.Proteus (1995)
As for repeat films being a disappointment or improvement on a re-watch. My thoughts were pretty much the same with the exception of two. ‘Color Out Of Space’ I found a little bit of a drag in spots compared to when I first saw it. While ‘Phantasm II’ did little for me this time around. Had plans to watch the rest of the sequels, but this lukewarm viewing changed that.
"Oh, there will be a day of reckoning for you, non-believer! A totalling of sums and a snapping of necks, and you will count yourself among the damned"!
Well, as 2020 comes to an end. Notch up another October Challenge. They seem to go as fast as they come. Thanks again to everyone who participated this year and in doing so keeping this challenge alive. From participants or bystanders joining in on the festive atmosphere the challenge brings to the fold. It’s great to see an eruption of horror talk (from reviews, conversations, recommendations, personal ratings etc) of what people have been watching through the month.
I know it probably hasn’t been an easy year for many, and binging on horror films for the month might have been the furtherest thing on your minds one time or another. But I hope this has been a good escape, and sharing this passion for the genre/or challenge with like minded individuals for October kept you in the spirit.
So congratulations to those who completed the challenge requirements and TheSowIsMine (159, 54) for taking top honours a third year straight. Just three short of breaking MrFurious 2017 record (161, 150). Over the years FridayOnElmStreet, ProgressiveElement and Lebowskidoo have been pretty consistent in hovering around the top 5. Looks like there’s an increase of people watching more films compared to previous challenges. You only have to look at 4th spot through to 9th which had tight competition. But then again it could just be the times we are in? To those few who fell short of the challenge. Thanks for sticking it out, and coming along for the ride. The more, the merrier. No matter the results.
Also the door is always open if anyone is interested in hosting the next challenge.
Hope to see everyone back again. Same time, same place.
