what you expected/anticipated.
What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962) - I was basically expecting a retread of Sunset Blvd. with two Norma Desmonds but it's really not like that at all and it's a very unique film in itself.
The Pink Panther (1963) - I had seen the later movies first, so I thought it would be the same deal. Turns out it's a much more of a straightforward caper film with Clouseau playing second fiddle to David Niven's Phantom character.
Man of the Year (2006) - I was expecting some goofy comedy about Robin Williams becoming president and instead it wound up becoming this dark espionage thriller.

Gran Torino. I was expecting a gritty, hard hitting drama, end up being more of a comedy

The Evil Dead. Wasn’t expecting the whole possession thing and thought it more a straightforward “the dead are coming back to life” thing.

I remember thinking Changing Lanes was going to be an action thriller, but it turned out to be a straighforward drama. And a very good one at that.

Smilla's Sense of Snow -- thought it was a chick flick, but it's a thriller

Stigmata was sold as an Exorcist style horror movie. It turned out to be a smart spiritual thriller.

Vertigo
It's one of the more well-known Hitchcock movies I hadn't seen and they were playing it on Peacock.
I did not see that story coming...& it's soooo good because of it.

I used to imagine what the movie would be like before I saw it. Roger Rabbit was different from what I expected--I assumed it was set in modern times or at least the cartoon cameos would be modernized--it was a surprise that Daffy Duck etc were drawn as 1940s versions.
Jurassic Park--I expected lots of tourists, not a tiny group.
Die Hard -I expected it to be about a guy who got turned into a metal man and no one could kill him.
Just kidding with that one.

Jurassic Park--I expected lots of tourists, not a tiny group. So basically, you did wind up eventually getting that movie.

I thought Panic Room would be a haunted house movie.

I thought 'Bridge to Terabithia' would be a lightweight fantasy movie.

Jurassic Park
Some of you might not remember or even know this, but Jurassic Park was originally billed as a kids movie. They even had toys in Happy Meals from McDonalds. I went in thinking it was gonna be very similar in tone to ET, and was very pleasantly surprised to see how dark it actually was.

In Bruges, I probably had no idea what to expect, but certainly not the genius it delivered.
Saw, I wasn't anticipating as psychological.
Galaxy Quest, I was ready for garbage. It's a terrific rainy day/sick day movie.
The Matador, was expecting vanilla lameness from a known cast. It's very good.
