A fine read. Went down smoother for me than the Shining did, which took me two tries to get thru because i couldn't get into it. But I have grown as a reader since then so that's probably not the best comparison anyway. This one I felt invested in during almost every step of the way...there was a little slowness when Dan first gets to the town of Frazier and meets all the supporting characters. The supports are fine here. Billy is great and his chummy old guy persona came across very easily. Doctor John was fine. The Stones were also fine altho they regressed into kind of typical borderline hysterical parent types by the end. Abra was fantastic! I can't express how fun it was to read this character who was written with such strength and courage in the face of what should be terrifying situations. Every single time she got one up on Rose and the Knot I felt myself grinning a maniacal grin. Speaking of Rose and the True Knot, as theyre called. They were solid. Not the best King villain but they also didn't feel like another larger than life evil supervillain cutout. They don't feel purely evil, and are clearly not purely evil....they do look and feel human. So much that at times maybe you empathize. And then you remember that they torture and kill little kids to feed off their psychic energies and....well you don't feel as bad for them when their plans go awry.
Overall it was a really fun read. Not as scary as the Shining and not as much of a sacrificial victory as most King stories like this...but i enjoyed it a ton and it feels like a natural progression of the Torrance family story. Id be interested in more from an adult Abra perspective or something along those lines down the road.

Read this book back in '14 and liked it, 4/5☆. I hadn't read The Shining but had seen the movie and even though I had heard it wasn't quite true to the book, I had no confusion. I remember the villain, Rose the Hat, quite well and will be interested to see Rebecca Ferguson play her in the movie.

I liked it a lot. It didn't lean of the Shining too much, as I thought it would at the beginning with the Overlook ghosts following Dan. My only complaint was he silly names of the TrueKnot. Apron Annie, Silent Sarie, Grandpa Flick? Not scary as the bad guys.
Didn't care much for the film. Tough to hammer it into "Movie Shining" when Doctor Sleep followed "Book Shining". Hated the ending. However, when Dan enters the Overlook and the Hotel "wakes up", that was very well done. Held my breath when he walked around the corner where he seen the Grady Girls.

I kind of liked the Knots jolly pirate nicknames because they made them half relateable. As twisted and evil they were there was a weird kind of kinship that you could admire from afar.

I'm in the middle of re-reading this for maybe the fifth time. I re-read The Shining just before it. I think Dr. Sleep is a very good book.

I've read close to 50 of his novels/collections. Every book he's every written - except the Dark Tower series. I read three of them, and hated them. *snore* My favorites (books) are: -Duma Key -The Stand -Dolores Claiborne -Doctor Sleep
