My daughter had pet rats and they have an unexpected amount of personality and intelligence for such tiny creatures. One rat she had since it was a weaned had as much personality and individuality as any dog I've met and more than some humans.

I hate to have to be the cynic here, but the rat was not brave. He had no clue humans were sending him in to get his brains blown out. He was just well trained. He did it for cheese. He was brave without knowing he was brave

Rats are surprisingly intelligent when it comes to avoiding traps, relative to most rodents, so the rat may in fact have sensed some danger but you are probably right. Food and sex motivates most of what we do.
