Well, I’m not comfortable with your discomfort! NO! I’m biased against orange and teal! I boo when I see them! BOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Oh. Not “oh”—“BOO”! Hmpf.

What they did to Terminator 2 is a travesty. The fixing up of the mistakes in T2 I am okay with, but the new look of the film is ugly. James Cameron and Ridley Scott ruined their original classics by recoloring them with teal. I don't know what they were thinking. Maybe there's a secret Hollywood cult where directors worship the color teal? I haven't noticed the teal look with Ridley Scott. I have never seen The Final Cut of Blade Runner for example.

Even though the teal look isn't natural for a lot of older movies, some of them don't look so bad with it if you watch them on DVD/Blu-ray. I mean you get used to it after a while. That doesn't necessarily mean I'm approving of the color change, but watching the new version isn't torturous. It depends on the movie and how much teal is applied.

I should've mentioned that Alien (thankfully) didn't get a teal regrade. I have read complaints about various other color changes online, but I think the movie looks pretty good on blu ray and DVD. No excessive teal, that I noticed anyway. BR Final Cut is a Teal-o-Rama though.

Yeah, it definately depends on the amount of teal. If done properly you shouldn't be able to notice it. But for some reason the colorists (or whatever they're called) go way overboard like they do with modern movies. I would make the argument though that modern visual aesthetics should not be applied to older films. It's about maintaining the original look, even if that look is now deemed "outdated" or whatever. Revisionism like that should not be acceptable. Especially since the original look is often better, or at least to some people, and has its own distinct style that should be celebrated. I wonder if one day current movies will be regraded to take the teal out once it falls out of fashion. That would be ironic.

Why so much orange and teal in movies? Do these colors pop more on modern flat screens?

Why so much orange and teal in movies? Do these colors pop more on modern flat screens? They do, yeah- at least in theory. They are on opposite ends of the color wheel. The idea is that all skin tones have some orange so it is boosted and then paired with the “complimentary” teal in the background. Teal is also often used in night scenes to create a cold atmosphere. Personally I think it’s incredibly ugly and extremely overused. And the idea that every movie must have the exact same aesthetic there days also just really annoys me.

I picked up a Blu Ray copy of the 70's classic All the President's Men and was horrified to learn that it had been re-colored in disgusting digital orange and teal. I have reached my patience for this nauseating trend of two tone color grading and will henceforth use this thread to rant and to inform... The reason for orange and teal (I think) is that they compliment each other. Orange and teal settled into my psyche when I was a little boy and travelled across the country with my wonderful grandparents, and we stayed at Howard Johnson's motels whenever possible. Wonderful memories. I can see why some people wouldn't like this color combo as it is basically gaudy, but I don't mind it. Really the only way I can deal with the harshness of orange is if there's also some teal. It's the only color that works with orange.

The Teal Tale Heart priceonomics.com/why-every-movie-looks-sort-of-orange-and-blue/My theory is they are trying to combat whiteness. That's also why black and white has to go--it's practically a KKK recruiting poster--everybody's super white or super black. You can't have multicultural harmony unless everyone falls in the same shades of orange. That's a disturbing theory. I like b&w films, especially for horror. So much more atmosphere.

Look at some of the stills above where they are the only two colors in the entire movie! How about using a different shade of blue or green at least! Nope, always teal. I can’t stand it when all movies look the same, especially when it’s such an overstylized look.
