This seems like a hotly contested debate among certain online circles.

The general consensus seems to be that the movie was too focused on looking cool to effectively portray the idea of superheroes and how they'd function in reality.
But I don't know anything about the TV show and I've never read the comic.

Zach Snyder was probably more obsessed with the murder and the killing than trying to tell a good story or adapting the comic correctly.
I haven't seen the show yet.

This is not a fair question.
Watchmen the movie was an adaptation of the comic itself.
Watchmen the TV series was a sequel to the comic.
They have different goals even though they use many of the same characters and themes.

I know that many DC fans will likely lean Snyder simply out of misplaced loyalty, but I really don’t think he understood Watchmen. I’ve never felt such a shallow rendition of something I loved, yet being so close to the source material at the same time. Detached from this - that intro does everything right - I sometimes use it to show my classes how you can world build so efficiently and effectively in a short scene (it is a masterpiece amongst the rest of the middling work).
The TV show can’t compare plot-wise, but the spirit of the show was absolutely duplicated in Lindelhof version. I was let down a bit with some parts of the climax, but also felt like all the characters were building upon Moore legacy. I’m actually sad that he’ll never watch it!

IMO, the TV series... because it humanizes the characters, which was the point of the comic anyway.

I actually bought it years ago. I just never got round to it. If you can get through the first 2 or 3 issues/chapters you will be hooked, I think.

Let's see, the comic is about questioning authority using extremely flawed and realistic human characters.
The show is about questioning authority using extremely flawed and realistic human characters.
The movie has a scene where Silk Spectre punches a guy 6 feet through the air. It's fucking badass, yo!
