It's not Ali, folks.
Muhammad Ali was involved in the biggest fight, hell, the biggest sporting event, of the 20th century. Two undefeated champions going for the heavyweight crown, Ali v Frazier....and Ali lost. Got his ass knocked down to the ground.
You can never be considered the greatest when in your greatest event YOU LOST!

No, these are facts, not thoughts, views, feelings or opinions. You want to like carrots, go ahead. That's taste. But dealing with greatest athlete is not taste or opinion. It is facts. Gretzky is the greatest, Jordan is the greatest...Ali doesn't even make the top twenty of greatest fighters ever. Maybe top 50. It is a fact -- he wasn't that good. A poor man's imitation of Sugar Ray Robinson (right down to the white satin shorts with black trim).

And it's not Dale Earnhardt, folks.
No doubt he had a style and a way about him on the track. But he was a bull. No finesse, little skill, just floor it and bash other cars. That's not a great race car driver. It's just, well, an intimidator.
And even he knew Jeff Gordon was better. He hated Gordon at first but really grew to be in awe of the guy. All the old timers did. Gordon was unlike anything the sport had ever seen. He was Jordan and Gretzky and Serena combined.

TENNIS (Men) - Pete Sampras Sampras doesn't have the career grand slam. He's the greatest American men's player, even though Agassi has a career slam. Federer, Rafa and Djokovic all have more slams and the career slam-- and they played against each other. Sampras arch nemesis was Agassi, and while Andre is my favorite tennis player of all time, he's not on the level with the guys I just mentioned.

NFL - Brady (probably the hardest to choose because the positions in football require such radically different skillsets. You could probably name 30 different guys and I wouldn't argue.)
Tennis (Men) - Won't be decided until the big three are all retired
Tennis (women) - Serena Williams
Golf - Nicklaus/Woods (I don't care enough about golf to really hash it out)
Boxing - Countless greats throughout countless weight classes, but Ali transcended the sport the way nobody else has.
Soccer - Pele
Horse - Secretariat
