I can do this one in exact order...
1. Ruth Gordon -- I could watch Miss Gordon all day long. She is too much fun! I love her comeback line when her lawyer tells her she is the most exasperating person he's ever met. "I accept all superlatives!" 2. Vera Miles -- Vera Miles is hilarious as the haughty murderess. Watching her be greedy and imperious is great fun. And I never would have guessed Miles to have had such a good sense of humor. 3. Susan Clark 4. Jack Cassidy (Murder by the Book) 5. Lee Grant 6. Donald Pleasance 7. Leonard Nimoy 8. Trish Van Devere 9. Richard Kiley 10. Robert Culp (Double Exposure)
Edit: I should have typed Robert CONRAD for "An Exercise in Fatality", not Robert CULP.

Patrick McGoohan Trish Van Devere Johnny Cash Jack Cassidey (MBTB) John Cassavetes Janet Leigh Leonard Nimoy Donald Pleasance Roddy McDowell William Shatner Thanks for posting your choices. I enjoyed reading them. Patrick McGoohan acted his part well, but military figures leave me cold. I love Trish Van Devere, though. Kay Freestone was a bit of an icy character herself, but she was also sympathetic. With the exception of Jack Cassidy, the killers were never more arrogant and easy to hate than Leonard Nimoy. He did an excellent job portraying a most unlikable man. I think most people would find Cash, Shatner and Pleasance to be likable fellows. Lt. Columbo liked these men, too. And never did Columbo show a softer heart than he did towards Janet Leigh. I liked her character just fine, just not enough for top ten. I've never been all that big a fan of Roddy McDowell and John Cassavetes is just slimy.

Try And Catch Me is the best Colombo episode ever, IMO.
And then there’s Jack Cassidy, who was always a pleasure to watch.

I was particularly touched by the humanizing moments in the McGoohan and Van Devere performances; on the other end of the spectrum, I was WTF amused by the hamminess of the McDowell and Shatner ones.

I am not sure I saw that one but I can imagine Gordon being a perfect counterpart for Columbo with the same disarmingly friendly manner--in fact wouldn't she have been a more logical choice for Mrs Columbo than Kate Mulgrew? That show really confused me.
