This has probably been the best year since the year Jesus died on the cross for our sins. I don't expect things to go this well again until 2024, when President Trump is re-re-elected! No doubt God will send some terrible plague or natural disaster

Comparing Covid-19 with the Black plaque, The Antonine plague and The plague of Justinian is moronic. Compered to those 3 plaques Covid-19 is like a mild flue. We're not through it yet, so we don't know. If you read the latter part of the article, it doesn't pretend to compare to Atonine or Justinian. It's just saying these three pandemics (including the Bubonic) change things a lot.

They reference two ancient plagues in the Roman Empire and of course the Bubonic Plague in Medieval Europe. Those plagues killed a quarter to a third of the population. To compare COVID to those is silly.
The death rate for those infected with COVID is not even 1%, not to mention the majority who are never infected.
They claim it gives China an edge and spells doom for democracy? Did a Chinaman write this? Their premise is absurd.
They aren't comparing COVID with those plagues.

They aren't comparing COVID with those plagues. They foolishly suggest its effect could be the same. That's absurd, pro-Chinese, anti-democratic rhetoric. It's a propaganda piece with an agenda. They are saying not as bad . . . only time will tell.

They are saying not as bad . . . only time will tell. It will have effects more like the SARS virus in 2002. Before COVID I always saw a few Asians in the markets wearing masks. I thought they were paranoid and a bit silly, and they were, since SARS died out and hasn't reappeared. So sure, ten years from now you'll see a few white people wearing masks in the supermarket. But if there is a vaccine within a year as they say, COVID will not have much longterm impact beyond germaphobic paranoia. Definitely our grandchildren will not be affected at all.
This is worse than SARS.

The shift in power from the US to China is well documented and already appearing in pop culture. In a post-apoc movie I watched earlier this year, the citizens of another country were wondering if the Americans (a character sneers) or Chinese would come to their aid. Just a few years ago it was always the US mentioned. Economists predict that China will become the dominant economic power within 30 years. Trump has damaged our relationship with allies, our credibility to the world. He has antagonized China but little else, mostly he's been impotent in foreign policy. Countries like Australia are under intense political power by China and America's weakened foreign policy is allowing the PRC to gain a stronger foothold in far east allied states.

Yes, it's worse than SARS, but nothing like the Bubonic Plague. SARS petered out without a vaccine. Sure, if no vaccine is found we're in for deep trouble. But they seem confident there will be a vaccine. I just was very suspicious of that article criticizing democracy and praising Chinese authoritarianism. ![](https://s26.postimg.cc/vdrisscd5/gonemad.gif) It had a political agenda which had nothing to do with healthcare. That's why I disregard its hyperbole. I majored in journalism in college. Journalists often have agendas and that one certainly does.
IMO, it wasn't so much praising Chinese Authoritarianism, but rather stating what has and may transpire. I don't think it's a political article, but more of a historical perspective.

The author says: Frankly, I don't see that this pandemic has made people lose faith in liberal democracy. It's a specious political argument, especially when combined with his praise of the authoritarian government in China. What other ideology does he want to give space to? Centralized control by a Chinese-style authoritarian oligarchy? It was a question, not a pronouncement, and a wonderful topic for discussion. Myself, I don't believe they will supplant the US as the next global superpower.

They will not supplant the U.S. The Chinese build cheap electronics. But they don't have the ingenuity to write great software. It's still a rice paddy society. Pinky, check your PM's. I sent you one two weeks ago.
Agreed about China doing it on the cheap. My daughter did her international business thesis on China's economy. So much wrong with it!!

At least a third new religion didn't take off after that last plague. Having two of them pop up was bad enough

If the US doesn't take steps China will become the dominant economic power within the next several decades and they already wield significant political power. The US isn't the 'mightiest country on earth' because of some divine will of god bullshit, we became an economic powerhouse because 2 world wars destroyed most the world's industrial capability and we were the only game in town. Those days are over and Nixon gave our manufacturing to China and now they are a powerhouse. Rest assured they are not dumb enough to give it back. We can't even make enough masks and toilet paper for our own population. Last week I saw alcohol wipes for the first time since April.
