See, on the one hand I'd almost be curious to see what kind of mini-story they come up with, but on the other hand, I have no faith that it'll be particularly good.
And yet, that's the type of thing I think should make something like being a writer for a soap a great opportunity for a writer - if they bothered to have standard of any kind. As a writer myself, I read about them having to come up with some sort of short, filler story to get them back on track, and I think, oh, that would be fun. I'm working on something right now that's sort of taking a similar approach, where I have a loose idea of a given scene and where the end point needs to be and then I just let my mind play with the scenario and see where the dialog takes me. Which usually into random, off the wall directions, that I rarely envisioned when I initially gave any thought to the scene; and that's what is so much fun. And that's why I always say, something like Days should represent a great big sandbox for writers to play in, if they just bothered to put any real effort into the stories they're telling.

Hmmm...who is coming back for this?
I agree, it sounds good but I don't know if they can pull it off.

I would guess they'll write around the characters they currently have back; maybe use it as an opportunity to tie up some loose ends from any developments, like Kristian's departure. At least, that would be the smart move.
