I thought of this case yesterday! I remember Canada had a news blackout, they even censored US news coming in on the case.
That only made people more curious. They burned the videos that the pair made of their victims, but I recall the details. Imagine being in the jury and having to watch them.
Wikipedia leaves out things. One victim they dismembered, Bernardo held the head and remarked how light it was. They cut the hair of the other victim to match his haircut--I remember that--and she started rebelling, and had to say sorry to him like 30 times in a row-and he insisted he be called "the King." They made her participate in some scripted thing he wrote--he was making a movie of it.
When their last murder victim was in a bathtub, and she started fighting him, he urinated on her then strangled her.
When they did a US film of the case, Canadian crew people announced they would not work on it. I am not sure what they proved by that--murders happen in Canada. There's one Canadian serial killer active since the 60s who got arrested and then was up for parole.
The fact Homolka got a lighter sentence--typical Canada.

Actually, (as Scott has already mentioned in this video), they cut Kristen French's hair, in order to get rid of any evidence. When he urinated on Kristen in the bathtub, he tried to defecate on her too!!!!

Actually, (as Scott has already mentioned in this video), they cut Kristen French's hair, in order to get rid of any evidence. Yeah but they said at the time that the haircut made her resemble his. I remember them saying they commented how they were like twins. Also there was something about cops wanting to smuggle out the videos to third parties, which was one reason why the evidence was destroyed.
What am I saying--the families must have seen the videos too in court? I wonder what they say about it now. What an awful thing--the last recording of your child is in a snuff video (I can't recall if they strangled her on video).

The families fought to have the video tape evidence destroyed, precisely to preserve their daughters' dignity. Leslie's mother sat in the court room & listened as the tapes were played (the video parts were seen only by the judge, jury, Crown & criminal lawyers). Leslie's father & Kristen's parents stepped out of the courtroom, when the videos were played (Kristen's mother was originally going to remain the courtroom while the videos of Kristen were being played, but, Kristen's brother & their parish priest both talked her out of it). No, the actual strangulations were not recorded. In fact, of all the criminal charges Bernardo faced in the crimes against Kristen & Leslie, from abducting them, to causing indignity to Leslie Mahaffey's body, the deliberating on whether Bernardo was guilty in their murders was the last thing, determined by the jury. Everything else was instructed by the judge, before they went off to deliberate (for obvious reasons). Took them approximately 12 hours to find him guilty of first degree murder in both their deaths.

You seem to be well versed in these things. Yeah, I followed this case real closely, back when it happened (actually, MOST people in Ontario - if not Canada as a whole - did).

I think that was in the American press. According to what Karla Homolka's testimony at Bernardo's trial, they cut her hair after she was murdered. That said, I can remember other very vile, revolting testimony she gave at his trial too, that made me choke as I remember reading it. I am not going to share here.

In that case, I will PM you. I wish I hadn't asked though I think I may have heard that at the time.
At least the victims weren't held long. Those decade long kidnappings really disturb me. I cannot imagine what that must be like-chained to a room for 10 years. That case with the guy holding three women in Ohio I think. What a total fucking asshole. The fact he could maintain it for so long--and he kills himself after a month.

Yes, & then there was that creep out in Austria that managed to imprison his own daughter in his basement, & rape her for 25 years. As for Bernardo; back when Kristen's body was found, the autopsy showed that she wasn't killed on the day she was taken. The police initially thought & reported that she was alive throughout the 2 weeks she was missing. Turned out, she was murdered only a few days after being kidnapped. However, Bernardo wanted to keep her prisoner for much longer, but, K. Homolka (who claimed that she was "friends" with Kristen, while she was a prisoner in their own home) insisted that Bernardo murder her on the day that they were to have dinner at her parents' home. Probably, if he hadn't been caught when he had been, he eventually would have abducted a girl, & keep prison for a much longer period of time.

I don't understand how she was given such a light sentence. She must keep a very low profile now?

The other case was the one in California where the guy kidnapped an 11 year-old. This one was really crazy since they almost had the guy within days from his car, and he had a sex offender record. Why the F wasn't he being visited at his home to check up on him?

The police bought into her claims of abuse, plus they couldn't find the video tapes (as Bernardo hid them in a light fixture in the house). Of course, they did have DNA evidence. That should have sufficed.
