Doc Emrick is retiring from calling games. DRRRRIIIIIVVVEEEE!!! He's the worst, I couldn't stand listening to him, to be honest. He was always over explaining every little detail as if his entire audience were 10 year olds.

Look for the season to start New Year's. The NHL is on the clock with NBC because they will be going full with the Tokyo Olympics, which commence July 23. There is little room to doddle. Oddly, they will be called the 2020 Olympics, merely postponed, because all their marketing has been paid for '2020'.

So the NHL season ended before the NBA season yet they plan to restart it after? I'm expecting a 48 game season, which they've done twice since the 90s, and then a regular 16 team playoff.

NHL doesn't have the same influence over media & marketing decisions the NBA has. I'm still not certain how they'll treat COVID-19, the Canadian division/schedule thing is a consideration, as is having 2-3 game season series like baseball schedule.

So if it starts on New Years - we're getting 'The Winter Classic' or no?
Would be awesome if we had numerous Winter Classics.
Been calling for this for years - too bad we can't have a lot of fans though
For instance - you do Flyers/Penguins at Penn State's huge stadium
Detroit/Chicago at Michigan's huge stadium
Rangers/Islanders at Yankee Stadium
Maple Leafs vs. Canadiens at (I have no clue what outdoor venue is popular up there)
etc etc
You do this all throughout Canada/The U.S. for New Years Day
Would be a big giant party and event for the NHL and their fans

Not sure NBC would go for it... which is all the NHL really cares about. Spreading the product thin isn't a special event. NHL is not the NFL. A double header would be fine, east & west conferences. Besides, CBC (and NBC?) already treat their Winter Classic pre-games as several hour celebration of the game already. There is an event coverage to it as it is.

If it's not The Flyers vs. Somebody - I'm not interested
We have the Holiday Season - people are still in Christmas mood - it's a giant Holiday - New Years Day - everybody is in a festive mood - a party day after New Years Eve
I think it would be fun for the towns and the fans of their respective teams - a giant tailgating event (of course we can't do it this year - but I think it would be a smart way for the league to have a little fun, make some money and promote itself)

Hockey Day in Canada, on CBC/Sportsnet (I keep saying CBC like it's 1988), does that in late winter every season... but no outdoor games. Triple header with 6 Canadian teams (or 4 games with all 7 maybe, 2 at the night?)... which is promoted like an all day hockey event. The way I think they do that is set up shop in Canadian towns with their media gear & basically treat those towns as 'NHL hosts' for the televised games or something. It's their way of going all-in to party the Canadian game with all the Canadian teams playing. It's probably not as huge as it sounds, I don't think casual fans even know which wkend they choose, nor do most ppl likely watch the entire slate. Points for trying though.

Seems obvious to me what the NHL should do for a 48 game schedule:
-- 7 team Canadian division with each team playing the other 6 teams 8 times, 4 each home and away all done in one shot to reduce travel time/costs and allowing road teams to isolate in one city before returning home.
-- 24 American teams divided into 4 6 team divisions, 2 east and 2 west. Each team plays the other 5 teams in their division 6 times, 3 home and away and play the other 6 teams in their conference 3 times, half all at home and half all on the road.
-- Top 4 Canadian teams play 2 rounds allowing one in the semi-final.
-- Each American conference will have top 2 teams in each division as well as next 2 best in the conference make the playoffs. The 6 teams will play each other in the first round and the 3 winners will pair up with the 3 winners from the other conference in the second round sending those 3 winners to the semis.
-- Hopefully by this point an allowance can be made for cross border travel and we'll then see the Leafs playing for the Cup on home ice early in June, around when the season normally would've ended and we can be back on schedule <fingers crossed> for 2021/22.

Coyotes renounce rights to Draft Pick Mitchell Miller after he got caught bullying a black kid with disabilities.
Good riddance punk.

Coyotes renounce rights to Draft Pick Mitchell Miller after he got caught bullying a black kid with disabilities. Good riddance punk. Yes I saw this story, and it caught my eye even though I’m not a hockey fan, and the details are appalling and horrifying - this piece of shit Miller assaulted and bullied a mentally disabled black kid for years, physically assaulting him and calling him the N word, and he was arrested after an incident in which he forced the kid to eat a piece of candy that he had wiped in an urinal, he was sentenced to community service, and he felt no remorse and has never apologized for the incident. Truly sickening stuff that borders on being a hate crime. Shame on the Coyotes for drafting this psychopathic shitstain, they only released him because the media dug up the whole story about what he had done and how it had affected his victim. And I see some right wing sewer scum defending Miller and saying he shouldn’t be “canceled”, fuck them, this guy is a pure piece of shit, I hope he never plays in an NHL game.

Shame on the Coyotes for drafting him - and then stating they were going to try to counsel Miller and use it as a learning lesson for him
Horrifying is right.
They did this (releasing him) - not because it was the right thing to do (again they should have never even have drafted him in the first place) - they were worried about all of the public backlash coming their way.
Disgraceful.

USA hockey has him shortlisted to tryout for the national junior team. I guess they'll be removing him from the potential roster as well given the backlash against the Coyotes?

Agreed - if it were an isolated case of bullying you might be able to say everyone deserves a second chance etc. But this was years of particularly heinous abuse. He supposedly showed a lack of remorse, and reportedly never even apologized to his victim. He certainly shouldn't be rewarded with a million-dollar pro athlete contract - shame on the Coyotes for even drafting him.

No body-checking will be allowed in the upcoming OHL (junior) season.
So it'll be like watching a Leafs game.

Looks like the Canadian division will be a go... which could be historically awesome - 6 of the 7 teams up here are playoff ready & the Sens are trying to be on the up. I've no idea how that gets them to 40 or 50 or 70 games without border/air crossings.
Seems like NHL will go the MLB route & schedule teams against one another 2-3 games in a row at a time, to cut way back on travel.

NHL shooting for a Mid January start 52 or 56 game schedule being discussed FLY OR DIE! Should we as sports fans take this "season" seriously if only 50 or so games are played and the Flyers do well?
