I always respected 'rock stars' more if they were amazing musicians and had great skill with an instrument ( even their voice )
He was one.

Was Van Halen particularly big across the pond? I know they already were big on hard rock/metal over there (Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Motorhead)

They were quite popular when in their prime. They had two top 10 singles - highest position 7 Two top 10 albums - highest position 6
In comparison:
Led Zeppelin
-0 Top 10 Singles (they refused to release singles, only one has ever been done, and that was in the late 80s) - highest position 21. -14 top 10 albums - highest position 1
Deep Purple -2 Top 10 singles - highest position 2
-11 Top 10 albums -highest position 1
Black Sabbath -1 Top 10 single - highest position 4
-10 Top 10 albums - highest position 1
Judas Priest -0 Top 10 singles - highest position 12 -3 Top 10 albums - highest position 4

Birmingham in particular has been a huge scene for heavy metal/hard rock (Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, and Judas Priest all hail from there)

This is such sad news.
He got cancer where his mouth held his guitar picks.

Sadly, he was a heavy smoker. Doesn't seem to matter sometimes, though. Healthy people can just get fucked and get cancer anyhow.

Eddie got cancer where his mouth held his guitar picks. He said this himself. Eddie Van Halen Thought His Tongue Cancer Was Caused From Putting Guitar Picks in His Mouth. Legendary guitarist Eddie Van Halen has died from cancer at 65. Van Halen originally had tongue cancer, which eventually moved to his esophagus. He once speculated that it was caused by putting metal picks in his mouth.
