Perhaps, but Pacino played that part so damn well it's hard to imagine anybody else playing Hanna.

Hackman can do pretty much anything. Pacino is king, of course, but I think Hackman could’ve pulled it off.

I'd have preferred it... for me Hackman brings more gravitas than Al.

Yes, but a lot of the excitement at the time of release was among crime movie fans who'd never seen old pals Robert De Niro and Al Pacino work together. They were both in 'The Godfather Part II' (1974) but didn't share scenes together. Since, they've gone on to other projects together, but I remember the audience crackling with atmosphere when the two actors came head to head, just six years on from Pacino's 4-year screen hiatus and 'Local Stigmatic' obsession.
I think some film fans experienced a similar feeling when screen icon Clint Eastwood came up against Gene Hackman in 'Unforgiven' (1992). They went on to make 'Absolute Power' (1997).
Another memorable moment was the encounter between Dennis Hopper and Christopher Walken in 'True Romance' (1993), two of the most intense actors ever to appear on screen.

Yes, but I don't think his delivery would had landed as well as Al Pacino.

His age might have been an issue.

I thought he could play very well Neil McCauley, the Robert De Niro role.
