Mary Poppins of 1964, Julie Andrews, Dck Van Dyke (OK his cockney accent was bad) David Tomlinson, Glynnis Johns and the two kids created magic and don't forget minor interpretations made by Jane Darwell, Elsa Lanchester, Reginald Owen and Arthur Treacher.
The Mary Poppins Returns, the only one returning is Dick van Dyke playing his own father, Emily Blunt takes over after Julie Andrews, and the new all star cast also includes Meryll Streep, Colin Firth, Angela Lansbury, Ben Whishaw, David Warner (as Boom).
Story wise it's about Depression-era London, a now-grown Jane and Michael Banks, along with Michael's three children, are visited by the enigmatic Mary Poppins following a personal loss.

There are some nice choices--Dick van Dyke, Angela Lansbury--but didn't we already have a Mary Poppins remake in Nanny McPhee*? (Yes, I know that was based on different source material, but they were obviously going for a Mary Poppins feeling.) I don't think it's at all necessary; and, more than that, it seems an easy way for the Disney corporation to make a quick buck by piggybacking on famous movies they've made before, just as they're doing with the live-action remakes of their wonderful animated films.
It could be a good movie--Saving Mr. Banks was surprisingly good--but I don't have my hopes up for it.
*A movie, about a magical nanny, which had--now that I think of it--most of the cast of this movie in it!

Hey, couldn't be worse than the planned Lion King remake. Plus, it couldn't be worse than HBO's soft core soap operas.
Mind you, it will probably still suck.
