Well it worked out well for Elizabeth Taylor.

I guess enough time has passed from the 1963 box office bomb to give it another shot

Well it worked out well for Elizabeth Taylor. It was actually the highest grossing film of the year, but the budget was so high it still bombed. Though it did eventually make its money back but it took several years.

Maltin Movie Guide Reviews:
Cleopatra (1934) - 3.5 out of 4 stars
"Opulent DeMille version of Cleopatra doesn't date badly, stands out as one of his most intelligent films, thanks in large part to fine performances by all. Top entertainment, with Oscar-winning cinematography by Victor Miller."
Cleopatra (1963) - 2 out of 4 stars
"Saga of the Nile goes on and on and on. Definitely a curiosity item, but you'll be satisfied after an hour. Good acting, especially by Harrison and McDowall, but it's lost in this flat, four-hour misfire. Nevertheless earned Oscars for cinematography, art direction-set decoration, costumes, special effects. Runs 251m. with overture, intermission/entr'acte. exit music."

Man, Twitter really hates Gal Gadot. Why? Some of it is because people believe she’s an anti-Palestinian Zionist, and some of it is because people are mad that a white woman (and yes, Gal Gadot is a white woman of German, Austrian and Polish descent) is playing an Egyptian ruler. In the former case, people seem to be overblowing things, and in the latter case, Cleopatra was Greek, so casting a white woman to play her isn’t really that big of a stretch.

True, Gal Gadot is closer to how Cleopatra looked than lets say Kerry Washington. But if they want to be accurate they should cast a Greek actress or a actress that looks Greek or is of Greek decent.

Gal Gadot can definitely pass for Greek. That’s why she plays Wonder Woman. If anything, if they want to be accurate, they shouldn’t get a supermodel to play Cleopatra.

We really don't need any more Cleopatra stuff. And if we did, maybe they could do a de-glamorized version closer to reality where she was only "beautiful" by the standards of her family being as inbred as the cast of a Wrong Turn movie. Alas.

We've got enough Cleopatra movies to be honest. That said, Gal Gadot is perfect casting as Cleopatra.
