What is about his face that makes him so popular in memes/GIFs people post as reply to others?

He's known for hamming it up, almost every film he's in he seems to make some goofy face.

He's known for hamming it up, almost every film he's in he seems to make some goofy face. Hamming. Not a native English speaker. But is that same word they say about Charles Laughton? I must admit that I like Nicolas Cage even if his choice of movies have been very poor for a long time.

(informal) (especially of actors) when people ham it up, they deliberately exaggerate their emotions or movements: When we realized we were being filmed, we all started behaving differently, hamming it up for the cameras. A ham is an informal word for an actor who performs badly, especially by exaggerating emotions.
Pretty accurate description of Cage's performances for the most part. Subtlety isn't exactly his strong suit.
