The OP says there's (apparently) a saying that goes “There is a general’s staff hidden in every soldier’s kitbag". They're calling ol' Nappy ambitious, I guess. Actually, the maxim was "There's a marshal's baton in every soldier's kitbag."

M. Bonaparte story has already been done www.imdb.com/title/tt0049541/I'm wondering what Nappy we will get? The megalomaniac who invaded everything but Antarctica or the poor Corsican who was bullied by the inbred Kings of Europe? He was a fascinating man. The Code Napoleon is still the law of France. He fought 60-70 battles, lost 7-9, only four, Aspern, Acre, Leipzig and Waterloo that amounted to anything. Like Alexander and Genghis Khan, muck of his success was due to his amazing subordinates. Lannes, Davout, Murat, Soult, Ney, Jourdan etc. but he couldn't avoid sticking his feet into two swamps, Spain and Russia.

Sorry, he's just too frickin' old for the role.
Phoenix's uniform in the set photo was worn by Napoleon when he was in his mid-to-late 20s. (The painting, on the other hand, depicts Napoleon in his 30s, about a decade later.)

Empress Joséphine was 6 years older than Napoleon
Joaquin Phoenix is 14 years older than Vanessa Kirby
Frankly they should have found an actor closer to Vanessa Kirby`s age.
I am fine with the casting of Vanessa Kirby as Empress Joséphine (She is 33 almost 34, so she is not to young as i have seen one user say), but Joaquin Phoenix is to old to play Napoleon.
This seem to be just like the movie Mank (2020) and The Dig (2021) where they cast an actor as the lead who is far older than the lead actress. When in reality the people they portray they where the same age or the woman was the older one.

Bump “Joaquin is about as far from conventional as you can get. Not deliberately, but out of intuition. That’s what makes him tick. If something bothers him, he’ll let you know,” says Scott. “He made [Napoleon] special by constantly questioning.” That inquisitive nature led to significant changes on the movie. “With Joaquin, we can rewrite the goddamn film because he’s uncomfortable. And that kind of happened with Napoleon,” he says. “We unpicked the film to help him focus on who Bonaparte was. I had to respect that, because what was being said was incredibly constructive. It made it all grow bigger and better.” www.empireonline.com/movies/news/ridley-scott-rewrote-napoleon-around-joaquin-phoenix/
