He was a troubled soul with a troubled mind, whose intensive eyes could melt any woman to pieces (not my words, maybe Liz Taylors') Not exactly my favourite actor, but he was in some good ones. Lonelyhearts has been on my to-watch list for ages Freud aka The Secret Passion 1962, was a very good but overlooked movie. Whatever I think of him, it's still a shame that late in life the only role Hollywood could offer him was John Goldfarb, Please Come Home 1965, and he rightfully skipped it.

I loved the way that he managed to play the only stable character in Suddenly Last Summer even though he was a wreck at the time.

I think Liz offered her salary as insurance on him taking REFLECTIONS IN A GOLDEN EYE (the Brando role) but he died.

The novel is a great favourite and in truth as an adaptation the film doesn't quite work overall ....but it is an interesting curio. Robert Ryan waltzes off with the movie as Clift's editor, but Myrna Loy as Ryan's dipso wife and an astonishingly carnal Maureen stapleton as a needy client of Clift's both shine too.
