When I saw this thread I thought, I have only seen one, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, based on a book I had read as a child. I saw the film years later and loved it. Then I saw this thread and saw Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and I said no, that was Ian Fleming. At this point I am totally confused. But I am certain that I like the 1971 film with Gene Wilder more than any others I have seen.

1) The Fantastic Mr Fox 2) The Witches 3) Willy Wonka 4) James and the Giant Peach 5) BFG (animated)
This just my order of preference. I do think Willy Wonka is probably the best made movie, but I've watched Fantastic Mr Fox and The Witches far more often.

If we’re including movies that either had him as a screenwriter or were based on one of his books (or both):
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
36 Hours
Fantastic Mr. Fox
The BFG (1989)
James and the Giant Peach
Matilda
You Only Live Twice
The Witches
The BFG (2016)
(big gap here)
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
