I remembered being disappointed by it back in 2000, but couldn't remember why. The color palette, or lack of color irritated me right away. IMDB says this was caused by a blue filter and it made everyone's skin look gray. I actually like a lot of this movie, but the last 15 minutes were really clumsy and unsatisfying. When the horseman turns back into Christopher Walken, the movie becomes unintentionally funny. (I wish his transformation wasn't CGI.) Walken is too famous for a non speaking role and is ultimately miscast.
Johnny Depp's performance was flat and one note, Christina Ricci's acting was not very good and they never had any chemistry probably due to their age difference, and Danny Elfman surprisingly failed to provide memorable music. He could have added so much more to this movie. Anyway, even with all these flaws I have to admit this is the best version of Sleepy Hollow ever made. It could have been a 10 out of 10, but I can only give it a 7/10.

I think it's good, but considering it's Tim Burton of all people doing Sleepy Hollow, I feel like it should have been better.

I remember seeing the trailer on tv thinking "Tim Burton will definitely "nail" this one." My expectations were sky high. Surprisingly, I don't think Burton has the right "chops" for horror movies. He never builds any suspense or tension in "Sleepy Hollow," he only delivers jump scares and gore.

THE ADVENTURES OF ICHABOD AND MR. TOAD has great animation and some catchy songs, but it doesn't have a single interesting character. ICHABOD CRANE OR THE LEGEND OF SLEEPY HOLLOW has a very scary sequence, but it's hard to really praise it because: A) It happens in the last 5 minutes or so. B) It doesn't fit with the rest of the segment, which is a romantic comedy that follows a formula closer to Warner Bros than Disney (bad things happen to the villain by accident whenever he tries to do something bad to the hero). I know that modern viewers have to keep the time period in mind whenever an old movie does something questionable, but the way the female characters are treated like objects (literally!) is just offensive. MR. TOAD OR THE WIND IN THE WILLOWS doesn't have anything noteworthy bad. It's just incredibly boring. 3/10 SLEEPY HOLLOW 1999 6/10 ------------------------------------- You can read comments of other movies in my blog.

Only the end of the Disney version is memorable.

I love the movie, it's almost Tim Burton's The Departed. It makes sense for him to direct a Headless Horseman movie, but it's a complete departure for him to direct a script that has a plot. Like Scorsese, Burton is more accustomed to creating characters, setting them in a situation and letting them play their way out of it.

Has nothing to do with the short story. The Disney version is closer.
Why did Depp say at the start "we are almost at the millennium" when it is 1799?

I enjoyed the movie. Agree though it was lacking something that took it higher than “decent”. The script was kind of convoluted and probably needed another rewrite . I wish we would get more “gothic horror”

I wish we would get more “gothic horror” Yeah, I re-watched it again yesterday. There are so many things wrong with this movie, it's hard to pin them all down. So many scenes could have been improved by a few changed lines of dialogue. Every character is one dimensional and none are fleshed out. Ichabod is one moment fainting or afraid of a spider and the next unafraid to fight the Headless Horseman alongside Brahm Bones. Very inconsistent character. I edited the ending by shortening Christopher Walken's odd transformation and cutting all the times he's on the horse saying "Hyah!" down to one. Hearing Walken's voice so much at the end makes him too human and less ominous. I also cut out Walken kissing the witch to make her mouth bleed. That part felt excessive and unnecessary to me. This way, the ending feels much more smooth and satisfying.

I like the film okay. It has some decent atmosphere for this time of year, but overall it could have been much better. I agree about Depp's Ichabod being very uneven. Fainting and being frightened one moment but then able to fight the Horseman and visit a witch the next. I've never been a huge Burton fan, Sweeney Todd is on my list of worst movies of all time. But I hate the source material too so that's not a surprise. Still though, Sleepy Hollow probably gets about a 6/10 for me. Maybe a bump up one point if it's dark and stormy outside when I watch it.

I don't think it'd ever be a 10 out of 10 for me. But it's a fun movie and I enjoyed Johnny's icked out wimp performance, which probably gave Prime a heart attack.

I liked it better in rewatch than when I saw it in a theater. mainly because the tone is serious.
One thing I disliked a lot was how the horseman was physical so they could kick him off a carriage. He is supposed to be a ghost.

I saw it a few years ago. It has a nice look, good score, and all that. I wasn't big on Depp's performance though. The way he played it kind of held the movie back for me.
