Jaws instead of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest: I would say no. Both of these films are very good.
Star Wars instead of Annie Hall: Yes. I love both of these films, but Star Wars was a huge cultural and artistic landmark. It was a pastiche of the past, but it featured a new vision of the future in the area of visual effects.
Empire Strikes Back instead of Ordinary People: I honestly think Raging Bull should won that year. So, while I love Empire Strikes Back, I would say no.
Raiders of the Lost Ark instead of Chariots of Fire: I recuse myself from deciding until I have seen Chariots of Fire. That said, Raiders of the Lost Ark is an all-time great adventure film, but I don't think it's Best Picture quality.
ET instead of Gandhi: I can see why the Academy went for Gandhi because of its historical nature and it has something to say about human relations. I am completely fine with Gandhi winning over E.T.
Back to the Future instead of Out of Africa: It's the same as Raiders of the Lost Ark. BTTF is a great film for its genre, but I don't think it's quite Best Picture quality. That said, I haven't seen Out of Africa so I recuse myself from deciding.
Fellowship of the Ring instead of A Beautiful Mind: Yes. The Fellowship of the Ring is an all-time great fantasy film in which several filmmakers tried but were unable to make for decades. It should have won given the effort that was put in, and managing to meet and exceed expectations. Meanwhile, I love A Beautiful Mind and it has one of Russell Crowe's best performances.
The Two Towers instead of Chicago: I don't think The Two Towers was the best installment of the trilogy, but I'm okay if it had won over Chicago, which was a lovely musical by the way. So, yes.
The Dark Knight instead of Slumdog Millionaire: Yes. TDK was an influential film and remains one of the standard bearers for the superhero genre.

Semi-related question: did Titanic deserve to win Best Picture?

Semi-related question: did Titanic deserve to win Best Picture? I would have preferred that L.A. Confidential had won Best Picture. Titanic is still awesome in its own right, and it's way more iconic. Another example would be Rocky winning over Taxi Driver, Network, Bound for Glory, and All the President's Men. If it were me, I would have chosen Taxi Driver.

There does seem to be a lot of forgettable Best Picture winners over the years. Has anyone here actually seen "Wings" (1927)? It was the first Best Picture Winner.

The dogfight sequences are jaw dropping, especially for 1927. The plot, hokum. But that was standard for the day. There was actually two best pictures, Wings and Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans. Best Unique and Artistic achievement. Sunrise was the better film.
I've seen every best nominated film except three. One lost, two not available. None were bad. Some are dated, In Old Arizona, Cimarron, Cavalcade. But none are Monster a Go-Go like

What did you think of "How Green Was My Valley"? It was the film that beat Citizen Kane for Best Picture.

What did you think of "How Green Was My Valley"? It was the film that beat Citizen Kane for Best Picture. It was a very good movie. Better than Kane? you need to remember the times. it was 1941, films like How Green Was My Valley or Going My Way had more appeal than Citizen Kane or Double Indemnity. 1941 was a tough year, you had The Maltese Falcon in nomination too.

Raging Bull should have won against Ordinary People.
Only two of the LOTR movies would have one - Fellowship for being the first ot ROTK for being the conclusion. Two Towers never had a shot.

I’m shocked more aren’t saying Back to the Future over Out of Africa. That movie didn’t even seem that well received by critics, which makes its Best Picture win kind of head scratching
