I feel like Michael Cimino's 'The Deer Hunter' depicts a community that exists somewhat in limbo between east coast industry and the midwest, but not being American, this is purely an observation from the U K. Either way, I love the movie.

I believe at the end, the mills are no longer billowing smoke. They're closed. End of an era.

The Molly Maguires depicts 19th-century coal mines. For anybody interested in the U K, this movie directed by Martin Ritt has been screening on the channel Talking Pictures.

All The Right Moves is set in a dying industrial town. Not sure there's any depiction of the workplace though.

With my first cinema crush. Lea Thompson, who is from Rochester, Minnesota. You might remember her with Kelly Preston in the engaging summer smash 'Space Camp'.

Black Legion (1937) is set in a Midwestern factory town. Never heard of this movie but I see it's directed by Archie Mayo and features Humphrey Bogart and Ann Sheridan. Thanks so much for the recommendation, bravomailer. I'll look out for it in the usual places.

Gung Ho is a film about the culture clash when Japanese businesses buy a US car plant. A good friend was the union rep at GE when they experienced this clash. The film is a pretty funny view of both sides with a plea that unions become a little more flexible and new owners reach out more. Somehow this issue has disappeared . Not sure why?

Slap Shot 1977, though it's very much a sport movie it also depicts one of those towns that grew up around a giant steel mill, that is soon going to close it's business, and what will happen with their only joy, the local Ice-Hockey team.

Funny enough, but the Randolph Scott and John Wayne film "Pittsburgh". Also Shemp Howard of Three Stooges fame makes an appearance. Dietrich seems miscast, but outside of that it's a good film. Kino Lorber has an excellent Blu-ray.
