Saw it again last night on the tube after not seeing it for quite awhile. I gotta say, that film still creeps me out. A real fun way to kill a couple of hours.
I was brought up in New England and lived near some pretty deep woods, and yeah, I can totally understand the dread that this film conjures up.
How do you folks feel about the film? Does it still give ya the willies?

It's done very well, but that style just isn't my cup of tea. It definitely did scare me when I first saw it though.

One of the biggest pieces of crap ever put into a theater claiming to be entertainment! No script . let the "actors" swear instead of having any even remotely lucid dialogue ....

God, when it was out in theaters, I heard so much hype. One of the toughest guys I've ever met told me the hairs on his neck was standing up.Scariest thing ever. It wasn't. The last few minutes were great but the rest was just goofs lost in the woods.

Quite possibly the biggest hype for the most little return. I liked the idea but the execution..I got bored.
Found footage films are the worst trend of the 90s onward. Hate it.

Never seen the whole thing (the ending admittingly the ending is kinda creepy). Didn't "Cannibal Holocaust" already do the whole "found footage" thing long before Blair Witch Project?

I liked the movie a lot. It seems it divides many on whether it's scary or not. It was a fairly tnse experience when I saw it, but the meaning of the ending didn't quite click with me until a little after seeing it...that was creepy.
Cannibal Holocaust is often brought up as the first of it's kind, but I don't think BWP ever claimed that it was the first. Much like Halloween in the slasher genre it wasn't the first of it's kind, but it was the film that opened the flood gates for many imitators.
I also think it doesn't get enough credit for how it was made, which was quite ingenious

I also think it doesn't get enough credit for how it was made, which was quite ingenious "Although having been given a brief crash course on using the 16mm camera, Joshua Leonard struggled to focus using it for the first few days of filming. This is why the interview with Mary Brown is of such poor focus and incredibly grainy. "

I used to dislike it, but its poor copycats (especially Paranormal Activity) made me rewatch and reevaluate it and I appreciate it more. I mean, it at least feels like actual reality for one thing. The horror is less watching Scary Boo Faces and more just witnessing three people slowly lose it. On that level, it's fascinating and the acting is pretty damn good. Heather Donahue (?) is a stupid Razzie nomination.

I've always liked it. I enjoy horror films that take place in the deep woods, especially when you don't really see the "bad guy". My cousin lives out in the Big Thicket in East Texas and we went on a lot of hikes through those woods. We once even came across an old house in the middle of nowhere which was really crazy. It had been abandoned for many years. I remember we took a couple of girls out shortly after this movie came out and we took them back out to that house and it scared them big time. I second the statement about seeing the people losing it in the movie.

I second the statement about seeing the people losing it in the movie. Like I said in my OP, I grew up near deep woods, and sometimes came across abandoned houses and structures here and there. One of them ended up being kind of a party house for us stoners in high school. It was a neat place to hang out at, though I often wondered why a creepy old house was in the middle of the woods with nothing else even remotely near it.

I agree that THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT is scary... when it tries to be. It's one thing for a horror movie to build suspense by not showing scary things for a while; it's another thing for it to not do anything until the last part. An 80-minute film cannot be this slow. Also, the characters are unbearable. Maybe it was on purpose, but that’s no excuse. 4/10 If BOOK OF SHADOWS: BLAIR WITCH PART 2 had been a stand-alone movie, I would’ve rated it higher than I did. The way it misleads the characters and the audience is clever. However, I still would’ve given a bad grade because the production has the quality of a TV series from the middle of the 1990s (the movie came out in 2000). As a sequel, it’s even worse. Not only they remove the found footage format; they choose to eliminate the creepy atmosphere. When an owl with evil eyes is the scariest part of your movie, you’re in trouble. What? That owl is scary. 1/10 BLAIR WITCH PART 3 1/10 ------------------------------------- You can read comments of other movies in my blog.

I have seen about 2000 horror movies and it’s easily one the scariest I’ve seen. I love it.

I just watched it again a couple days ago. While I think it does drag in parts, it’s still for the most part an effective movie. I liked the shoddy filmmaking, dialogue and acting which made it feel more real.

Takes some time to get going, but once it does it's quite effective with its atmosphere and scares. A good exercise in sometimes less is more when it comes to scary movies. Sometimes not seeing things and hearing just sounds in dark conditions can be very effective for scares.
Any of you seen Blair Witch 2?
