One of my favorites when I was a kid. It gets a lot of grief, some of it deserved. It really went off the rails in the last season. Especially the Great Vegetable Rebellion (Dr. Smith turns into a carrot). But it was huge fun, The first season was much more serious and Dr. Smith was more evil. When it went to color, it got more campy but it was entertaining as hell. Any of you bubble headed boobies a fan?

There's an episode with space pirates and I would bet money that it inspired some ideas in Star Wars-namely Chewbacca and the Greedo alien. I don't think I am mis-remembering --the hairy monster pirate had a bandolier. The green faced alien had a bright orange vest.
I liked the episode where Robby the Robot showed up.

Jonathan Harris was brilliant as Dr. Smith. He was pure evil in the b/w ones, a ninny in the color ones. Irwin Allen had only planned on having him for a few episodes, hence the eternal "Special Guest Star" tag in the credits. But he was so popular they had to keep him. His interviews are great, he really seen what the people wanted in the character and gave it to them, no matter how sill the critics thought it was.

Fun facts about LIS, for the two fans
1. The original pilot didn't have the Robot or Dr. Smith. It was just the Swiss Family Robinson in space. The family makes it to Alpha Centauri and start living there. The pilot was never aired.
2. Most people view LIS poorly compared to Star Trek, which aired at the same time. But LIS trounced ST in the ratings (neither put up I love Lucy numbers, granted)
3. The music was done by an up and coming composer, John Williams. It really launched his career. Some similarities in the Star Wars music

Several years ago, around Xmas time, the LiS Season 1 DVD set went on sale at Amazon.com and I bought it. I may be in the minority, but I prefer this black and white, more serious season to the later ones. I only own Season 1. Most people view LIS poorly compared to Star Trek, which aired at the same time. But LIS trounced ST in the ratings (neither put up I love Lucy numbers, granted) I'm one of those "most people", and I do own the entirety of Star Trek: TOS on DVD. This will not surprise any one who has visited the link beneath my avatar.

Dr. Smith sabotaged the Jupiter II, and Jonathan Harris sabotaged Lost in Space. He turned it into a showcase for himself, with the approval of Irwin Allen.

I loved the show as a child. As a young adult I considered it crap and was embarrassed that I had ever found it entertaining. Later on I settled in the middle.

Dr Smith got a lot of fan mail, more and more the sillier he got. The original concept, Swiss Family Robinson in space sounds dull as dishwater. And the show appealed to kids

I didn't see the show (or at least what I remember of it) until the 90s when they ran the entire show daily. So as an adult I think the first season was more solid but I didn't mind the Smith antics as the series went on, and the low point was the vegetable one. I read Guy Williams said the show suffered from a bad case of "the cutes." He retired after it didn't he?
I recall a photo of Williams and Lockhart together on a game show--Family Feud? Didn't see a mention of that reunion in wikipedia.
