Welp -
The offseason is here folks
Let the wheelin' and dealin' begin.
One of the huge questions out there is - where does the best catcher in baseball JT Realmuto wind up?
Mets? Yanks?
Who's going to be buyers in this time of Covid?

For the record - we've got a lot of dough coming off the books Arrieta, Gregorius, Robertson, Realmuto, Alvarez, Gosselin, Hunter - can clear more by declining options on Neris and Phelps That's around $76 million or so - To re-up Realmuto I don't think Bryce Harper will be happy if we lose the best catcher in baseball. So I'm saying JT re-signs here - unless he's a giant doucher and doesn't want to play here.

What a mistake the Angels made giving Trout and Rendon all of that money.
It's nice to see the little guy up there ahead of them - The Oakland A's who had the 25th highest payroll in 2020 - also the Twins who had the 20th highest payroll.

According to Jim Salisbury -
Realmuto does not want to leave Philly - and states it's nice to have fans.
He also does not want to apparently play in New York
However if he's offered a record setting deal - he might take it
Stay tuned for more red hot stove action

Most teams are looking to cut payroll coming off of a year of a lot of lost revenues, except for the Mets, Yankees and Phillies. Admitting that you don't want to play in NY is tantamount to setting $10m on fire. I'd imagine keeping him would be a top priority for the Phils, along with signing every reliever they can find. The Mets could surely use a catcher too, but they need to focus on starting pitching and landing a real center fielder.

I think he might be playing the Phils here to get the Mets and Yanks in a bidding war to get an enormous record breaking contract for a catcher
i.e. - if he tells the Mets/Yanks that he really enjoys it here - but.........if there's enough money on the table....
Money talks
But what do I know

I don’t think Middleton, the Phillies owner, has any intention of signing Realmuto. Before signing Bryce Harper he made that “We’ll spend stupid money” quote, yet nothing since then has shown this to be the case. The Harper deal isn’t even all that stupid-money - spread out over 13 years is he even in the top 10 salaries? But he’s had over a year to sign JT. If he wanted him he could have stepped in when Klentak was busy giving us the world’s worst bullpen. He’s crying poor due to lost revenues from Covid. Realmuto may not sign with a NY team but he ain’t staying here, and that is total bullshit level ridiculousness.

Well yes, 100%, but I don’t think that’s what he meant.

Tommy Hunter was stupid money
Well yes, 100%, but I don’t think that’s what he meant. They've got enough money to resign Realmuto with everybody coming off the books
And I think they're going to offer him a record setting deal for a catcher.
If he doesn't sign it - I think it's all about him not wanting to be here.
It's one of the reasons Klentak is gone too - he couldn't get anything done with him - which looks horrific especially after giving up Sixto Sanchez
To me - this is Realmuto playing the field to see if he can get the highest offer (which I don't blame him for) - but I think the Phils will (and have been) offer him the moon.

Report: A.J. Hinch Emerges as Favorite to Become Detroit Tigers Manager
One team's trash is another team's treasure. If the Tigers think he'll bring them postseason runs akin to the Astros, however, they'll end up down in the dumps. I'm looking forward to all the trash talk with their AL Central rivals - but if he doesn't do well, he might end up canned.

Hysterical news (in a sad kind of way) Phillies President Andy MacPhail has echoed owner John Middleton's concerns about conducting and hiring a GM during the times of COVID19 This while their catcher - JT Realumuto - arguably the best catcher in baseball - just hit the open market and their rival The New York Mets in the same division are one of the teams rumored to sign him Have they paid any attention at all to what the Sixers have been doing their offseason

New Mets owner Steve Cohen just announced that every Mets employee, from the scouting department, to the groundskeepers, will get retroactive pay to true them up to whatever they would have received for a regular season, but for the pandemic. That is about the most un-Wilpon like thing I've ever heard and I like it!

Sounds like that guy has Boo Koo Bucks from what I read.
Be fun for the Mets to be good again and be big players during Free Agency like the Yanks.

Spending isn't really the problem. Spending wisely, however, has been a problem. Being penny smart but pound foolish repeatedly. I loved the deGrom signing (and they had to do that) but things like refusing to sign Justin Turner for $1m, but turning around and giving hapless dickhead Alejandro de Aza 2 years, $14m, bringing back a terrifyingly ineffective Jeurys Familia on a 3-year(!!!) deal at $10m per. Even if Familia was decent before that signing, that's a terrible contract. Sure, they got snake bitten a bit with the Jason Bays and Yoenis Cespedes types, but they need to overhaul their scouting and player development departments from the top down. And just the stupid shit the Wilpons ALWAYS did. Renting out the parking lots on Opening Day so the circus could use them, forcing fans to park a fucking mile away at the tennis center. Publicly shitting on players in the papers so that the fans wouldn't be upset when such fans didn't re-sign with the team. This is something they would do repeatedly. You started seeing it with Syndergaard last year and that's when they entertained the idea of shopping him. Or they publicly talk about a player being "soft" when he doesn't come back from injury fast enough so they can justify letting him go at the end of the year. They're just clowns. Also, "Boo Koo" bucks. Nice.

Yankees declined Brett Gardner's qualifying offer, making him a FA. Doesn't mean he's going anywhere.
