Reading the comments from UK readers on the NY Times article, you are not alone. Still, it's a bloody disgrace what China does against any public figure who dares criticise them.

Admire him for doing it but no connection to his current situation.

I think he is using the tweet to cover his inability to be a more influential player, at Arsenal. He did very well at Real Madrid but who wouldn't in a team that included Benzema, CR7, Kroos, Ramos, Modric, Di Maria, etc. He doesn't have teammates of that quality, at Arsenal and although he is a star, he is not a leader on the pitch... yet he is being paid to play like one.

China’s treatment of the Uighurs has always been a very complex issue. A year ago a delegation of 18 Islamic countries, which included Saudia (an extremist country that spreads horrible form of Islam) and Pakistan (another country with links to many terrorist Islamic networks), had declared that China is not responsible for the charges made against it regarding Uighurs and that China actually tries to reform the Uighurs. These Muslim nations blame the west for spreading propaganda against China. In the west, this issue is most consistently brought forward by Radio Free Asia, which is a propaganda organization set up by the US long ago. Now, I do not believe that China does not mistreat Uighurs. Do no get me wrong. What I believe is that different countries involved in this have different purpose of raising or suppressing the news regarding Uighurs. Yes, China does suppress Uighurs . They absolutely do. But Muslim countries give complete clean chit to China either because of the influence China exerts on them or because they are scared of China. Pakistan for example sees China as a strategic ally against India and that's why Pakistan gives clean chit to China on the issue of Uighurs . Some Muslim countries see the US as the ultimate villain and so they don't speak against China. (and But I strongly believe that there is one more reason Muslims countries stand with China on this issue. I think Muslim countries see western countries as an easy prey and so even if they know China mistreats Uighurs they don't say so because they know that in the long run western countries will fall to Islam whereas China won't. So they concentrate on their war against west rather than try to provoke China, which they know won't fall to Islam. But the Muslims believe that the soft attitude of western liberals against Islamic extremism is surely going to help them conquer the west - which is the aim of most extremist Muslims. And for that reason they are siding with enemy of enemy. Now as for Uighurs themselves - I believe China sees religion as their enemy. They have controlled or changed the minds of most religious people of other regions. In fact most Chinese are non-religious by now. Uighurs being Muslims cannot easily be controlled as Muslims are one of the most devout followers of religion among all religious people in modern times. So it's very understandable that China sees them as a danger.

I thought he was just being sidelined because he wasn't playing well - as far as I know (not that that is very far at all) he hasn't exactly been very productive for quite some time. Ozil, as a bit of a luxury, flair midfielder, had always had a tendency to be able to disappear in games. However, that wasn't anything unknown when they handed him his last contract. Not discounting that though, to say he isn't in their best 25 players (or whatever size league squads are) is simply ridiculous. Fact is Arteta picked him in the last 10 games or something before the league lockdown, so to suggest in that non playing period he somehow became so bad he isn't even a squad player is a bit of a joke. Seems obvious it was either the China comments or refusing to take a pay cut which has seen him frozen out.
