Catman likes the Hy-Vee. Good selection, good prices, great gas card rewards.
Catman does not like the Fareway. Lousy selection (which they are somehow proud of), so-so prices, no gas card. And they have the worst entry way which they usually clog with so many 'specials' it can be impossible to enter the store behind someone who has to carefully inspect all the products.

I love Publix, when I lived In New Mexico I liked Albertson's and Trader Joe's, When I lived in the Chicago area I liked Jewel's, Dominic's and the A&P when they were still around. I don't like Walmart and have not been there since the pandemic.

Catman will admit to also shopping at Walmart for some items, especially Morningstar Farms vegetarian products. A whole dollar cheaper per package than Hy-Vee.

I’m almost 38. Ive lived in California, Washington state and Pennsylvania. My list consists of stores from All 3 states
Enjoy
Trader joes Wegman’s Stater bros. Costco Redner’s wherehouse markets Shop rite Fred meyer Food4Less Whole foods
Eh, it’ll do
Bjs wholesale club - its not as good as costco. But my nearest costco is too far away for me to get my $55 yearly membership worth. Walmart - always crowded but usually has what i need Aldi - you never know if they’re gonna have what you want because they always change their items Winco foods - always crowded
Despise
Landis - it’s a local supermarket here in Pennsylvania with only 5 locations. Because they’re not a major business, the prices are too high. Its a nice store but too damn expensive
Metropolitan market - a market in the seattle-tacoma area with 8 locations. Again, like landis, expensive because they’re not a major business. Also its a nice store but too expensive
Haggen - a Washington state company thats now owned by albertsons. Safeway and albertsons merged in 2015. Due to the merge, about 160 west coast stores were closed. Haggen moved onto them to expand outside of Washington. It was fa failure and albertsons sued them and ended up owning them.
Haggen had a store called “top food and drug”. When the one near me closed in 2013 - they wouldn’t even lower their prices to clear out their stock. They just put it in other haggen and top stores near by. The prices were always too high.
QFC - Pacific Northwest market. Like fred meyer, its a Pacific Northwest owned store owned by Kroger. Fred meyer is like a Walmart supercenter with kroger prices. Qfc’s prices were always higher than fred meyer. I barely ever shoppes there

Don't like shopping at but the prices are good: No Frills A little better than the above, prices pretty good: Freshco If I really need a middle-eastern/mediterranean fix: Adonis (little on the pricey side) Have NEVER shopped: Costco, Walmart, Whole Foods Really pricey but mostly Canadian goods: Farm boy and the local farmer's market when in season (the most expensive of all)

anyone a Costco fan?
My brother loves Costco.
I don't. I fine the quantities too large and the shopping experience unpleasant.

Can't say I really like shopping at Sam's or Walmart (not really all that keen on supporting the Walton family, among other reasons), but they do have decent prices and Sam's in particular has some unusual and good items. Of traditional store chains, Kroger's isn't bad, and Aldi's is pretty decent, especially on produce. I find Aldis's competitor, Lidl, fairly over-rated, but you can find some good buys if you hunt around. Publix is way overpriced, as is Wegman's, though I shop both occasionally. Food Lion is something of our local regional staple, but again, prices have taken a steep jump since their acquisition by the Dutch company Royal Ahold, and selection has diminished, especially on their house brands.
Fresh Market is pricey, but again has some excellent quality meats and produce, and a great deli section. Trader Joe's is good too. But my personal favorite remains our local original 'organic' grocery, Ellwood Thompson's. I'm not averse to sometimes shopping Target's grocery selections too, especially if I already need to make a trip there for other items.

anyone a Costco fan? My brother loves Costco. I don't. I fine the quantities too large and the shopping experience unpleasant. I've been to costco with my sister once or twice when she shops for her office. I feel like a tourist as I watch all these people buying thee too large packages and using costco as a "normal" supermarket. I wander around looking at everything: it's all so big, and so bright and so noisy and so crowded! And I just don't understand it!!!

Got 3 lb of organic bananas, a 3 lb container of peeled garlic cloves (I will use all or almost all), a 1 lb container of aged 24 months parmigiano reggiano shredded cheese, and a rotisserie chicken. Wasn't crowded. Went right to the self-check.

I don't really like shopping at Aldi. They have some very reasonable priced things and fresh produce can be ok, but there is never the same variety and many of their other packaged products are imported, Germany, South Africa. I like to buy homemade as much as possible. They also don't have self-checkouts in Oz like the bigger supermarkets, Coles and Woolworths and I dislike having to queue behind someone with a massive shop when I only have a few items. Plus I find their staff very stiff. We have to stick a quarter in the cart to use it, or pay someone a quarter to use their cart when they are returning theirs. Same there? Also, no bags or boxes, so everything just ends up back in the cart separately.

Plus I find their staff very stiff. Yeah, no self checkouts at the US ones either, and that can sometimes be a pain as their registers aren't always well-manned. We also have the emphasis on imported prepackaged items; some are good, some less so. Definitely smaller variety since the stores are only a fraction of the size of the two-football-fields long mega supermarkets that have become ubiquitous here, but they do have some things that the bigger stores don't seem to. I don't think I'd ever make Aldi's my staple grocery source, but since they're already close to the main chains I shop at I do try to squeeze in a stop every now and again.

I don't mind their chocolate, but Aldi is never my first port of call either. When my folks visit, they gravitate towards Aldi, don't have in NZ, but that is a cost saving for them and being old, they don't use self-checkouts regardless. The chocolates are always worth a stop, lol! And ours has some type of brioche-style bread, studded with chocolate chips and available in both plain and chocolate. God knows that's got to be one of the unhealthiest things around, but I do sometimes give in and buy a loaf.

If I do see some product I use, I think: eight boxes of poptarts. I use one a week. Do they expire within two months. what flavors are there? Do I like all the flavors? Do I have a good place to store eight boxes? What is the unit price? (then I do some math in my head) In the mean time 4 people have reached around me to buy the pop tarts! I don't get it ! lol You made me feel good. I thought it was just me. AND to pay a fee to shop there? Not for me!!

The few times I have gone,( two friends have taken me, and when the Costco opened they allowed everyone to shop free for a month or so without membership) I was overwhelmed. I wouldn't find those few items I wanted. but I would find the free samples. lol I liked that part!

They're all the same store now. I went inside an Acme (Also an Albertsons company) last month and I felt like I was shopping at a Vons (Safeway) in california. or are you referring to before the merge of Albertsons and Safeway in 2015?

Haven't been in Albertsons or Safeway in quite a long time, so pre-merger. I use my Safeway card at Randall's here, but it's not at all like the Safeways I remember from CA. Their prices and selection suck. I've heard their meat is better than H-E-B, which isn't saying much, but I've yet to test that. They are like Target to me. I often go in for a while and end up leaving with nothing.
