My girlfriend is a massive Kate Bush fan and I decided to listen to all of her albums back to back in chronological order. This took me about a week and a half. She's gonna yell at me for this.
The Kick Inside ”Wuthering Heights“ and a whole load of skippable stuff. 5/10 Lionheart - Nothing stands out. Meh. 5/10 Never for Ever - “Babooshka” is good, “Breathing” is better, “Army Dreamers” is absolutely wonderful but “Violin” is properly putrid. I don't remember the rest. 6/10 The Dreaming - Now we're talking. This is the Kate Bush I'm after, full mad vocal stylings and suitably bonkers music to go with it. 8/10 Hounds of Love - Almost as good as The Dreaming but the second half starts to lose a bit of focus. 7/10 The Sensual World - And we're back to the forgettable stuff. 5/10 The Red Shoes - Saccharine tedium. She yelps "don't want your bullshit" at one point. I couldn't agree more. Dreadful. 3/10 Aerial - Extremely long and soporific but at least she had the sense to split it up into two parts so you have a chance to wake up and go to the toilet. 4/10 Director's Cut - Saccharine tedium remixed. Dreadful. 3/10 50 Words For Snow - The best thing she's done since the 80s but not by much. 5/10

The Clash - Give 'Em Enough Rope It's 40 years later and I still want to punch Sandy Pearlman. I used to feel the same way but I've recently warmed up to Give 'Em Enough Rope after disliking it for so many years. "Safe European Home" and "Tommy Gun" are, of course, classic Clash songs and easily the best songs on the album. "English Civil War", "Cheapskates" and "All the Young Punks" come close to greatness but don't quite make it, and the rest of the album is decent filler. Overall, it's just not as great of an album as the one that came before it or the one that would follow it - therein lies the problem. Pearlman's production is flat but it works for the most part; the rough edges of the debut are gone and there was obviously an attempt to give the band a more mainstream sound but the hooks, energy and punk sentiment are still front and center. A good but not great Clash album.

A good but not great Clash album. It was an attempt to appeal to an American market and it worked, unfortunately it took away what was best about the band which was their roughness at that time, Bernie Rhodes is as much to blame but was a very bad choice of producer. When it was clear how much the band hated him as well,(getting him beaten up at a gig if I remember) he should have been let go. The album isn't great and suffers from the usual need to write a second album quickly while on the road, but it deserved better.

The "Aliens" soundtrack, composed by James Horner. Great spooky stuff, although I really like the action cues, like "Ripley's Rescue".
