World wide there has to be lots of prayer for covid-19 to end. I wonder why it continues. In wisdom of John Lennon: When I find myself in times of trouble, Mother Mary comes to me Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
In the wisdom of Madalyn Murray O'Hair: Two hands working do more than a thousand clasped in prayer. In the wisdom of Donald J.Trump: "We're rounding the corner" Are they working? Yesterday, October 29th, had the highest covid-positive tests in the United States, over ninety thousand.
Twenty years ago, I was sitting at a BlackJack table next to a gentleman who was fondling his Rosary Beads. I'm sure the pit boss was laughing all the way to the bank.

Very good. I like that and you're probably right.

World wide there has to be lots of prayer for covid-19 to end. I wonder why it continues. It depends on how prayer works. If prayer is really an activity where humans, through ritualistic incantations, somehow tap into some universal force that, if wielded correctly, actually affects the physical world, then it might be having an effect. It might be that half the world would have died without those billions of chants and thoughts. Or if prayer is somehow placating some obstinate, pernicious God who bases its responses of the piety and faith of adherents, then maybe we're seeing precisely how much this god can be coaxed into doing...with enough sacrifice and groveling.
But it pretty much shows that whatever forces there are or god there is, their/its primary interest is not to eliminate human suffering. God might be totally uninterested in human affairs, or even just as happy watching humans suffer as keeping them from suffering. There's no way to tell.

Yes, even more so if you don't wear a mask while praying.

You'd be surprised how many people prayed for it to exist long ago and hurt as many souls as possible. Most people probably didn't know they prayed for it. Maybe I did without knowing it. We have lots of prayers that are diagnosed as "subconscious desires". And I've noticed prayer works mostly long term. The time to pray for a safe voyage is two years or so before you take the voyage, beating the negativity to the punch. That may mean praying five years before you take the voyage, three years before the ship is built. That's how hateful the enemy has made this existence. This is the kingdom of evil angels, and the good God is omnipotent outside the tiny box we live in, and has to squeeze in the holy ghost between the evil prayers we make in the flesh. So, to pray now, it's best to pray against the disaster and plague that the enemy is setting for 2025. Until then, you're on your own. And "Arghh" every time I see "effect" instead of "affect" in the thread title. I guess it's passable, but it's awkward.

God blessed humankind with the intelligence to handle plagues without his assistance. It’s not his fault if his children are too spoiled to make the effort and expect Dad to take care it.
During the Black Death, I’m sure folks and their priests were praying harder than anybody could possibly pray today, because they lived in a magical world populated with demons, witchcraft, angels, saints, and miracles. The old saying “you can catch your death” meant getting the sniffles could be just that.
However, it wasn’t until they got off their knees and started cleaning up the diseased squalor the average person was expected to live in back then did the Plague abate.

The same way all prayer works. But tell us how? Some forms of Prayer have a real effect, but you have to realise that most modern Christians only engage in that style of prayer that is essentially begging God for favours, which maybe in a tenuous way has the effect of focusing the prayerer.

No, no my dear fellow. you don't beg when you ask for a promise.

No, no my dear fellow. you don't beg when you ask for a promise. Not quite sure what you are driving at here, I tend to find a simple zinger does not convey the meaning of a good argument, but I think it is fair to say that the vast majority of Christians use prayer as a means of asking god for favours or presents, which is in a way begging god for things.
