Until recently, I might have said The Dresser (1983).
But, after seeing it recently, I have to go with Topsy-Turvy (1999), easily one of the most underrated movies I have ever seen.

My favorite films about the stage TWENTIETH CENTURY TO BE OR NOT TO BE INGMAR BERGMAN’s MAGIC FLUTE A MIDWINTER’s TALE All about Eve LES ENFANTS DU PARADIS THE RED SHOES AUTHOR AUTHOR ALL THAT JAZZ All about Eve is a masterpiece in every way--especially its rich dialogue. Topsey Turvey is rich in its granular detail and is a biopic to boot.
Interestingly, the screenplays of both of these films was written by their respective directors.

I would add Stage Door. Perhaps, it's a bit on the comical side for some to consider.

I love this musical comedy.. It is sort of a play within a play about a play. "Brush up your Shakespeare"...........

It's not from the classic era, but I'd like to recommend Richard Eyre's 'Stage Beauty' (2004).

VALLEY OF THE DOLLS. Just kidding but, nevertheless, essential viewing.

I wanted to see Topsy-Turvy since I first heard about it but my local multiplex never booked it. I finally caught it on a cable channel and purchased the blu-ray the next day. It is arguably among the top ten greatest show business films, perfect in every department and, despite its length, never tiring. Begin watching at any point and you have to stay with it to the end.

The Great Garrick (1937) / James Whale This is a movie that I was introduced to when TCM aired almost all of Olivia de Havilland's feature films during the month of her 100th birthday (2016). Not quite a biopic, more of a comedy based on his character.

Topsy-Turvy is indeed a good film, but I never seem to like Leigh's period pieces as much as his other work (which I love)
