Michael Cimino actually died about a year and a half ago. Hmmmm... Where did I get the idea he just died? And how did I miss his death in the first place? Weird... My favorite after the Leones However, I don't much care for The Deer Hunter

NOOOO! I love Keely Smith. Her voice is so beautiful and unique. I think she sang the best version of "You Go to My Head". Her music with Louis Prima is so fun and guaranteed to lift your spirits. Thank you and R.I.P., Keely

Thank you and R.I.P., Keely I'm with you, jervistetch. At the beginning of this year, four of my favorite female vocalists were living; now only two are (Barbara Cook passed in August). I'm afraid to even mention their names at this point (one's my age; the other's 90). The bell-like clarity and precision of Smith's voice lent authority and sincerity to every note, but her skillfully-smooth fluidity made it seductive without sacrificing vocal power and going all breathy as some do; at the same time, its style was never that of a "belter." It was a bell that dripped honey. Of those four, Keely Smith was the only one I never saw perform live, much to my everlasting regret. But how fortunate we've been for the astonishing richness and concentration of talent the 20th century produced, and for the enduring record (no pun intended) of it left to continue to delight both those of us who remember and those yet to discover.

There's another word I should have included: effortless. In the same way that Astaire appeared incapable of doing anything that wasn't graceful to the eye, Keely seemed that way to the ear. And of course, that's where the artistry comes in, 'cause we're all aware of the expertise required to make anything in performance look or sound effortless. And a part of that was in the way she remained cool without losing her warmth.

And the comically tolerating looks Keely would give to Louis Prima's antics were priceless. They were like the looks that Alice Kramden would give Ralph.

Filmmaker Kjell Grede has died aged 81. Grede directed the popular family film 'Hugo And Josephine' (1967). Kjell Grede:from Hugo och Josefin 1967, Grede's debut movie and also his nearly biggest hit "Josefin is a six-year-old girl who lives isolated in the countryside, where her father is a priest. She has no friends until she meets Hugo. He is a carefree boy who rather walk in the forest than go to school. Together with the gardener they make up fun things to do." 1987, the critics didn't like it, but the audiences did, making it his biggest hit about "The life and times of the Scandinavian artists' colony who lived in Skagen on the Danish coast during the 1890s. Not so much a biographical account, rather a portrait of a way of life. The painters became famous for the way they used the light in their work, and this has also been mirrored in the cinematography"

VarietyActress Heather Menzies-Urich, best known for portraying Louisa von Trapp in the 1965 film “The Sound of Music,” died Sunday night in Frankford, Ontario. She was 68. Menzies-Urich, the widow of actor Robert Urich, had been recently diagnosed with cancer, according to her son Ryan Urich. Urich said his mother died on Christmas Eve, surrounded by her children and family members. “She was an actress, a ballerina and loved living her life to the fullest,” Urich said. “She was not in any pain but, nearly four weeks after her diagnosis of terminal brain cancer, she had enough and took her last breath on this earth at 7:22 pm.” Born in Toronto, Menzies-Urich’s first screen credit came in the TV series “The Farmer’s Daughter” in 1964. She was then cast as the third-oldest of the seven von Trapp children in “The Sound of Music.” The film adaptation of the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical was a box office smash that won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Ted Chapin, president and chief creative officer of the Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization, praised Menzies-Urich’s efforts to keep the movie fresh for new generations. “Heather was part of ‘the family.’ There is really no other way to describe the members of the cast of the movie of ‘The Sound of Music.’ And of ‘the kids,’ Heather was a cheerful and positive member of the group, always hoping for the next gathering,” Chapin said. “We are all lucky to have known her, and she will happily live on in that beautiful movie. We will miss her.”
