By teen horror, I meant that I feel Poltergeist is a horror film more oriented towards a younger, teen audience. It's a movie that would have worked very well for me at, say, 15 as opposed to The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, which poses a much more brutal viewing experiences and which can be daunting to watch even in mature years. Definitely not for the kiddies. I feel what Spielberg intended to do, was more of a spooky haunted house "family" orientated horror film, yet it is too strong for kids under 8-10 I'd say. I have never thought of it as a teen orientated horror film. It had very wide appeal, except for the "precious" that don't do scary films at all. If anything, I'd say TCM is more teen orientated, but its pure terror and skill of representation puts it into a different ballpark altogether.
I took my 6yr old cousin to see it and it was a wrong move. She liked it, but was scared by it, especially the clown doll and had nightmares. My Auntie wasn't too happy with me.
6 is very young, but I can see a 12 year old or young teenager of that era enjoying the movie, maybe finding it creepy but not too bad. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, on the other hand - that's a movie suitable for adults only. And it would be too intense for many.
