Some critics said that they would've tolerated AFTER despite how clichéd it was if it hadn't taken itself so seriously. Danna Alquati in particular suggested a self-aware comedy that uses those teen dramas tropes in order to make fun of them. Is it possible that the makers paid attention to those reviews? Because they hired Roger Kumble to direct AFTER WE COLLIDED and the end result feels more like a sequel to CRUEL INTENTIONS. Not every joke lands, but it still feels like a breath of fresh air. Josephine Langford and Hero Fiennes Tiffin already had chemistry in the previous installment, and now it's put to better use with more erotism. Thanks to all these elements, the plot never feels boring despite not being very eventful. There's a scene where Tessa Young and Hardin Scott (the protagonists) participate in what might be one of the most shameless examples of product placement in film history. The camera makes sure that the audience can read "Victoria's Secret" on her panties right when he's taking them off. There's another scene where Tessa says that only fiction books are real books. Nothing about the scene indicates that she's in the wrong, even though she is. You could argue that it's not a flaw since it's characterization, but her overall personality doesn't really match that kind of mentality. 6/10 ------------------------------------- You can read comments of other movies in my blog.
