Claude Giraud has died at the age of 84. Giraud was widely regarded as being one of the finest French theatre actors of his generation. He often worked with director and teacher Jean-Laurent Cochet whose students included Claude Jade, Richard Berry, Andre Dussolier, Gerard Depardieu, Isabelle Huppert, Daniel Auteuil, Fabrice Luchini, Francois Cluzet, Carole Bouquet, Jean Reno and Emmanuelle Beart among others. Cochet passed away in April aged 85.
Giraud performed in many of the works of 17th century French playwrights Pierre Corneille, Jean Racine and Moliere.
“The Americans had Lee Strasberg and the Actors Studio. The French had Jean-Laurent Cochet.”
- Pierre Delavene, director of the Cochet-Delavene School (founded by Jean-Laurent Cochet in 1965), remembers his mentor, The New York Times
Jean-Laurent Cochet & Micheline Boudet
Though the stage remained his first love, Giraud did work in cinema and television where he was often cast in romantic dramas, literary adaptations and historical pieces. He was a member of filmmaker Bernard Borderie's stock company.
Thanks for the movies, Mr. Giraud.
