They just seemed more eye-catching than the usual boring ones they do now. The horror ones particularly, they often gave them something of a griminess that better suited them.
For example - here's a good majority of the films I've watched for each October Horror challenge I took part in, with VHS covers for those released in that era.

Yes. Sometimes the covers were better than the movies. It's an art that's not in demand anymore.

I select movies based on public comments mostly and sometimes on professional reviews. The title can be very important. However there is a very good movie called The Earthling that is nothing about extraterrestrials. I learned about it through public recommendations.
I really liked the artwork on vinyl LP covers more than the artwork on CDs and DVDs. I think the space on optical disc and VHS tape covers is inadequate to say much.

VHS covers and movie posters. The latter has basically gone extinct thanks to the digital photoshop crap.
