Despite being very much a Scorsese fan, i never saw this one until last night. Early on, I found it difficult to get into. The movie eventually finds it way, especially in the last act and our title character’s last temptation. Willem Dafoe is really excellent in an especially challenging role. His Jesus is conflicted, doubtful, loving, but vengeful as well. Like anyone else, he really questions it necessary to be crucified. As someone who is distinctly not religious, I still respected and appreciate this more human approach to the most famous person in history. ***/****

And it's that more human approach people had a problem with and protested in 1988. Huh. But yeah, fine film.

"It is accomplished" I disliked it the first time I watched it, but admire it a great deal now. It is a very powerful, very well made and interesting take on the story of Jesus. I am an atheist, but Biblical stories fascinate me. The casting has always bothered me a bit though, Harvey Keitel is especially miscast. I am not a mythicist. This means that I believe that Jesus most likely existed as a historical figure. Think about it, if Jesus was a real person and just a man, that means he is probably the most followed human being who has ever lived. That is much more awe-inspiring than if a God exists. Mark Twain's "Letters from the Earth" www.cs.umd.edu/~mvz/bible/ltrs-from-earth.pdfOne of the best movies of 1988 and Peter Gabriel should have gotten an Oscar nomination for the score.

I thought it was a decent movie (after the slow start, it kind of grows on you).

It does get more captivating after the first half though.

THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST has a lot of interesting ideas scattered across almost 3 hours, when it could've been a lot shorter. Actually, most of them are concentrated in the last part. It has a very good music score, but the performances... They're not bad, but I feel the cast and Martin Scorsese abused the rule of historical movies that states that the characters don't have to speak like people did in the time period. The way they talk is too modern and it's distracting. 4/10 ------------------------------------- You can read comments of other movies in my blog.

This is my favorite Scorsese movie and it's really one that benefits from multiple viewings. It can be difficult to get through the first hour or so on first watch because you have your pre-knowledge of the Christ story, but here you're watching Jesus's awakening and watch him interpret and working out his feelings on words coming through him. It's a fascinating movie I watch over and over.

Not that’s it a bad film but just doesn’t hold much replay value, at least in my opinion.
