That is something.
I thought perhaps he'd dared to describe a black player as having "pace."

I have some sympathy for him. For those of us who are "senior citizens", it needs to be remembered that we grew up with a vocabulary that we picked up from our parents/elders. This included language that is now "non-PC". It is very difficult when conversing, especially if there are emotions involved, not to instinctively revert to the language that we have used for most of our life. That's just habit. If we had the time to consider our words, we would probably change a few to make us more in tune with current attitudes, which in my opinion are OTT. It is so easy to jump on the PC bandwagon and condemn. It is time for the "victims" to get off their high horses and learn to tolerate and avoid the all-too-easy and currently popular "finger-pointing"

He's had his fair share of controversy but I wonder if this is just righteous over-reaction in these days of touch-sensitive reactions.

I'm 48 and definitely grew up in a society (Ireland) with very different attitudes and vocabulary to the one I live in now. I have no problem when conversing with people using language and vocabulary which isn't offensive to them. You know why? Because I choose to be that way. I'm sorry but I just see this attitude as stubborn and willfully lazy. It's very easy if you really want to. It's just a matter of having a bit of self-awareness. Also shouldn't victims be listened to and not be accused of being on a "high-horse"? That's some lame assed privileged shit. Victims should be engaged with and listened to so others don't become victims too. That's just having some basic empathy and common sense.

What did he say - was it literally just saying "coloured" players rather than black or was there more to it?

What did he say - was it literally just saying "coloured" players rather than black or was there more to it? I believe this is it. If he'd said 'footballers of colour', would there be all this? 'People of colour/color' seems a reference that is widely used without controversy. It seems he just got the words arse about face, not that I can see any difference in sentiment.

Gallows humour maybe but that is kind of funny if he's been torpedoed by his own mangled attempt to say the right thing. Especially as you can imagine the "social media ... free-for-all" outrage which would have been after him as soon as he said it!
