It just started. I know some people really like it and single out Barbara Hershey's performance as particularly good. We'll see. I'm not exactly a huge fan of hers. Okay, she just got smacked in the face and her mouth is bleeding.
I guess I'll get back here in two hours.

Ron Silver is such a slimeball in this. I like Hershey and have a movie of hers on the dvr I had never ever heard of until I taped it. Shy People (1987). Martha Plimpton and Jill Clayburgh are in it too. I've only watched bits and pieces of it though. New Yorkers Clayburgh and her daughter Plimpton go to the Louisiana buyou to interview and do a story on some distant relatives (Hershey and others) living in a big old rundown house in the swamp. The Entity is good and creepy. Beware the under the house scene.

Not a Hersey fan myself, but she nailed this one. It's such a creepy movie, and the music score every time the entity manifests only adds to the feel of terror. Some of the scenes are really hard to watch. Bad Snorkasaurus, I agree Ron Silver was a slimeball in this. But he usually plays the same type of obnoxious character.

The film manages to keep itself creepy and taut, is well acted and even though the visual effects are cheesy and there is no real satisfying resolution, the film still pretty much manages to get what it intended to do right. The supernatural sexual violent aspects of the story are handled very skillfully, without resorting to cheap shock thrills or exploitation. Even the nude invisible manipulating breast scene is played out as freaky scary phenomena.

Yeah, the only movie I have ever seen where Silver's character is at all likable is Garbo Talks.

Okay, I really didn't like the movie at all. It had an intriguing premise and was said to have been based on a true story. But I thought it was flat and shallow and half-baked. I don't necessarily want to have stuff spelled out for me, but there was just no depth to the main character's horrifying predicament. Nobody tried to talk about why this might be happening and the film had no psychological resonance. When somebody asked her why she thought the entity was raping her, she just kind of laughed and said "maybe it thinks I'm atrractive".
I don't know. If the movie had no aspirations and was okay with being pure exploitation, I think I would have enjoyed it much more than I did. As it was, I didn't think it was scary in the least.
I also thought that Barbara Hershey's performance was anemic and uninvolving. She went through the motions, but I thought her character was very uninteresting.
I hated the Ron Silver character. The only character I liked was the friend. And that 'WHAM WHAM WHAM WHAM' music every time the entity came knocking was so annoying.
The last 20 minutes picked up some speed, but not much.
I'm actually watching the highly entertaining "Poltergeist" right now. Another movie about unseen forces, also from 1982. I've probably seen it 20 times before. Wonderful, likable characters.

I saw The Entity as a young teen when it was first released. I was very intrigued by the entire premise and I was a tad scared too, but that was the supernatural ghost aspect and those things scared me then. I ended up going twice, as I dragged my sister to it. Part of my appeal in The Entity would be the nostalgia factor and while I do think the psychological aspect is undernourished too, it is also alluded that she was playing out her own rape fantasies, I liked how the film was visually presented, with all those weird camera angles to give an impression of things not quite being as they are. I also have no issue with Hershey's performance. With what she worked with, she made her Carla very convincing and didn't resort to ott histronics. I felt bad for her and it was a very difficult thing to convince others of what she experienced, if it was how she said it was. I do feel they did attempt to sell the film on a "woman's" fear of rape and used that as a crutch for shock value of theme and to be scary. I watched it about a year ago on dvd and laughed at it more, but I wasn't bored by it either. But yes, a little more meat on its bones and it could have been something so much more. Poltergeist is a keeper.

I see the movie as being a disturbing, emotional and creepy movie about rape trauma. It is by no means a great movie, but it is effective and interesting. It is a good movie, that is made even better by a powerhouse performance from Barbara Hershey. I am a big fan of her as an actress btw. It also is a very visually enticing movie with a memorable score. It emphasizes the dangers and fears that women have to deal with in a male driven society, all through a supernatural metaphor.
