The Brain (1988) by Ed Hunt Cheesy but enjoyable, and at times silly fun low budget canadian monster movie, and where David Gale plays an evil mastermind, whom through his very own psychic talk show, along with the talents to that of a certain special brainy friend, wants to suck the entire town dry, by manipulating and controling the citizens brainwaves, and very soon, his evil scheme will be able to go international. Have not seen it for years, but one of those late 80s horror releases that I have always time for, and I guess beside Gale as yet another doctor madman, there is a lot of charm and atmosphere taking place, specially the use of that futuristic high-tech building, or the school and suburbian places as well. I guess the film was trying to make it out that it went on in America, but most of it were probably filmed near Toronto. The absolute "highlight" of the show, is this huge monster-brain, which looks like something straight out of an old 50s campy b-movie, and it is hard not to crack up, when the main actors are doing their very best to scream their lungs out, when witnessing this laughable and hilarious creature. Another "creature" who makes good use of the comedy part, is Dr. Blake's overweight henchman, and I gotta say, considering he was quite a big guy, he did a whole lot of running during the film. Anyway, you soon pretty much learns, that if you want to keep your head, and see this guy showing up, with either a huge needle or an axe, you better get the hell out of his way, and fast. All in all, while not a "great movie", it still packs a lot of cheesy and enjoyable moments, and that features a ridiculous movie monster, lots of funny scenes and yeah typical late night b-movie stuff, but it helps that I am very fond of this kind of entertainment.

This movie actually had a really good concept. The bedroom scene was rather well done. But yeah, the overall silliness eventually takes over. Especially when the Brain goes Pac-Man. I don’t think I’ve ever been disappointed in a David Gale performance... despite the familiarity of it.

Considering that it most likely was shot on a very small budget/time, I thought it had a very good/cozy atmosphere going, loved the movie sets, the bad guys high-tech building and the whole suburbian backdrop, as well as some beautiful scenes of the city from a distance at night time. David Gale seemed to be kind of a "late bloomer" within the movies business, or at least according to wikiepedia, where he seemed to really hit off, almost at 50 years of age, and since then he seemed to enjoy playing crazed doctors and mad men in horror and sci-fi films. Sadly, his career ended far too early, as he already had become quite a cult name by then, and I have yet to see the sci-fi/horror title Syngenor (1990) which was supposedly as "sequel" to the low budget monster film, Scared to Death (1981). Another one I have long wanted to see, is The Guyver (1991), not sure how much of screen appearence David have in either of those, but as you bring up, he have never disappointed me before either.

Speaking of David Gale. Earlier this summer, I joined in on a a fun game, where people would draw images/pictures from a film, and others would then try to pick out the right title. The one who got it right, first, would then go on and draw a new picture/image. And well, I tried my best, to do both Re-Animator and David some "justice":

I don’t mind the little b-pic Syngenor. Very loose sequel. If you can call it that? Only real connection I remember is that they used the same alien design. The story here, doesn’t really tie in with Scared to Death. Anyway it is probably Gale’s most meaty role. And you can’t go wrong with the lovely Starr Andreeff. The proto-slasher Savage Weekend is the only film I can think of where he’s playing it straight.
