David Elleray getting in on the act.
No crap, Columbo. Make it stop. How many times has it been said that a clear and obvious error should require just a moment to confirm?

VAR - what a complete and utter fuck up.
How can a game that used to pride itself on being the most basic of games with the easiest of laws to understand have the most complex and worst implementation of the video referee ?
Then again, it’s football - baffling decisions with global implications are par for the course in football.....

VAR should be restricted to goalline "Did it cross the line or not?" queries Don’t need a VAR for that. The Hawkeye / Magnetic Ball thing works just fine. You’re a genius Wullie !

A few random thoughts:
- Absolutely agree with him on this handball nonsense. If it is unintentional, there is no reason to penalise it. Now you have ridiculous situations where defenders have their arms around their backs to avoid the possibility of the ball accidentally hitting their arms and a penalty being called. - The offside x VAR thing is a conundrum. If you have VAR, then you can't say "oh well, the attacking player was only ahead by a few cm, offside shouldn't have been called". If you have technology, then the tolerance has to be zero. You can't say "oh well, they look to be roughly on the same line". - Long before VAR became a reality, I was of the opinion that it would hurt the flow of the game. Didn't need a crystal ball to see that coming.

Now you have ridiculous situations where defenders have their arms around their backs to avoid the possibility of the ball accidentally hitting their arms and a penalty being called. And then you had clear ball hits hand situations in the Liverpool game last night when the penalty wasn't given. Just no consistency. And there won't ever be because it's completely subjective. Same with the VAR offside line is he / isn't he. And if it's going to be subjective then you may as well go back to the opinion of the referee rather than some guy sat in a TV studio half way across the country...

It's not imposed on the EPL, the clubs choose to have it and can choose to make it go away. It;s a shambles but one of their own making. The powerful clubs obviously believe it is in their interest to have it.
