Its my favorite Clooney performance, but one wonders if Cruise could've been just as riveting.

I can't see him in the role. He can be a very good actor when he wants to be (Collateral comes to mind), but I don't think that character was "flashy" enough for him to have fully committed to it.

I agree, but that role was a "flashier" role than the part of Michael was...Cruise was playing a sociopath in Collateral; Clooney was playing an ordinary guy (with issues to be sure), and I can't see Cruise being interested in that. He wants to be the center of attention.

He wants to be the center of attention. I feel like a key to channeling Clayton is whether Cruise can convey self loathing and sternness. Clayton's a type of character whose his own worst mortal enemy and is sort of toeing the line between being agreeable and objectiveness, Cruise might have made him into a much more hardened, broken down Mitch Mcdeere.
