I don't know how many outside of NY metro area heard of him. He is one of the most entertaining sportcasters. I have listened to him on WFAN since the 90s when he started doing overnight, then moved to the day time teaming up with Evan Roberts. Last Friday was his last broadcast. What made him great was his passion about his team, especially his losing teams, the Knicks, the Mets, the Rangers, and most of all the Jets. His Jets rants are classic. When the Jets missed the playoff on the last game of the season, you will sure not disappointed at his rant. If his team wins, he can be poetically funny. One of the best opening monologue I remember was when the Knicks finally mad the final overnight. He went through the whole decade of the pain and torture that he suffered through watching the Knicks finally get to the big game. I never laughed so hard. Thanks Joe Benigno for all the joy you gave me listening to sport talk. You'll be missed on the radio.

It's been a long time since I've listened to the fan with any regularity, but I also liked Beningo. Evan Roberts I can do without but Beningo is solid. The despair in his voice following soul-crushing Jets and Mets losses, or rather any day that ends in Y, truly came across.
Wasn't he a caller that ultimately got promoted to the gig he got? Or am I thinking of someone else? I swear I thought one of the fan guys was a true success story like that, like that Eagles movie with Mark Wahlberg.
I didn't realize he was stepping down, but I trust he's actually retiring, as opposed to fatass Francessa who has retired 4 times now.
Go enjoy yourself, Joe. You've earned it.

I think he was calling in when he was in broadcasting school, so it's not the craziest leap, but still that's a very cool story. I'm totally with you. I haven't listened to the Fan hardly at all of late and only just recently learned that he had his last show the other day. I'm sorry that I missed it. I now really have no reason whatsoever to listen unless there's a game on. Maybe late night if 'Shmooze' is on every once in a while. What's worse is also that convicted felon and unspeakable dipshit Craig Carton is replacing him. Francessa was a ridiculous gas bag, but he was good for an unintentional laugh from time to time. No appeal to Carton whatsoever. The Fan is pretty much over as far I'm concerned.

Yes, he was a frequent caller to Mike & the Mad dog. He won a contest and became a sportcaster. The book below has a chapter about him. If you are interest in the history of the fan, it is a fun book to read. I think Jastremski came from the same route too. Joe is the only one I listen to regularly. He is like a fan speaking on the radio. Very easy to identify with him. He expressed the best how I felt when the team got a very brutal lost. Those 90s Knicks teams, he took the words out of my mouth. There is no other sportscaster like it.

Not too crazy about Craig Carton. I doubt I'll be listening to the fan that much anymore.

I love 'Kid' Carton - he said he's going to be talking about 'responsible' gambling He sucks. He's stupid, he's not funny, he's abrasive and obnoxious, he's not entertaining, and he's a piece of shit and a felon. I couldn't stand his garbage opinions and vacuum of comedy before I knew he was a criminal. I certainly won't be listening to him now with that added.

But just look at all of that emotion he drew out of you
That's what it's all about - a reaction - good or bad
We have a few of them here ourselves - it's wildly entertaining listen to a host crap on his callers and vice versa - kind of like a love/hate relationship - at least for me

That's true if there's any quality or entertainment value to what they do. But I don't react to him one way or another. I simply won't ever listen to him.

TheGoodMan19 millar70 i used to call in the NESN Red Sox spring training show on live TV in Florida, when they had Joel Hanrahan and quote Fletch: "Somebody's bucking for a promotion. Probably that pederast Hanrahan."

Deal. ย I have a thing or two to say about Steven Maltz. TheGoodMan19ย millar70ย i used to call in the NESN Red Sox spring training show on live TV in Florida, when they hadย Joel Hanrahan and quote Fletch: "Somebody's bucking for a promotion. Probably that pederast Hanrahan."ย I got on the air once on WFAN, way back in 1988 or something, I talked to John Davidson about the Boston Bruins. He said that they preferred to discuss New York teams, but he humored me for about 5 minutes and we talked Bruins hockey. I listened to the Fan a lot back then, it really was the first radio station of its kind. Imus was hilarious back then, he had just gotten out of rehab and now had to work at a mainly sports channel. He was so grumpy about discussing sports, real funny stuff. I remember a Saturday afternoon when one of the regular guys was out sick, so they had this young guy named Chris Russo filling in. Within a half-hour, I knew this guy was gonna be a star. It was very soon before he had a regular shift, then eventually being paired with Mike Francesa.
