Has such a spectacular opening, the rest of of the movie can’t live up to it. Still, Daniel Day-Lewis is ferocious and brilliant. The monologue about fear, with the U.S. flag around his shoulders, is the kind of moment that wins awards. If you’re gonna have Liam Neeson as a sword wielding priest, maybe not have him exit so early.

I like it a lot. It's wonderfully made and Daniel Day-Lewis gives one of my all time favorite performances. I find the story engaging and there are some fantastic scenes.

I always liked it. The opening fight is awesome. There are elements that simply aren't interesting like the love triangle or Henry Thomas' role. But I dug both DiCaprio and Daniel Day-Lewis;this may be my favorite performance for the latter. Watching Jim Broadbent as Boss Tweed is pretty funny. I appreciate it trying to portray a grittier seedier side of the immigrant experience in 19th century New York.

Mad Max was one. The opening car chase was great, then the movie poked along for a a long time

Looks like you've been on a little Scorsese binge, Popeye. I mean with Last Temptation of Christ and now Gangs of New York.

I actually think the whole movie is just as great as the opening scene. It gets more interesting as it goes along imo.
Martin Scorsese is great at giving a particular feel to a certain time and place and of course a lot of credit goes to Daniel Day-Lewis for his brilliant performance. I think DiCaprio is miscast, but still gives a mostly convincing performance. Same goes for Cameron Diaz.
As others have pointed out in the past, this movies has some of the greatest art direction of all time.
9/10

6/10 - painfully long.
I knew someone who was an extra in this. (His character was killed in the opening fight.) DD Lewis deigned to have lunch with a few extras and stayed in character throughout the meal. So, he had lunch with Bill the Butcher.

Actually really enjoyed this one, Daniel Day Lewis is excellent. I have to agree with a post above this, his speech with the American flag draped over his body was Oscar worthy. The film really captures a moment in time when the Irish were considered to be one of the lowest forms of humanity, and bringing into America a despised Catholic faith.

I like imagining this movie and Lincoln taking place in the same universe. Two Daniel Day-Lewis!

It's beautifully made and Daniel Day-Lewis is amazing, but after a very strong first act it just fizzles out really quickly. It's also one of the most intense movies about violence I've ever seen, even though it's not particularly bloody, but there is such a meanness and viciousness to it. (The death of Brendan Gleason's character came as a complete shock to me.)
I thought the love story might've worked better with a different actress than Diaz and didn't think there was much chemistry between her an Leo. By hijacking the entire movie Day-Lewis almost makes the others feel like mere extras in his own story. Di Caprio's character particularly suffers from this, there's just not enough interesting going on with him.
It's also unfortunate that we never really find out what makes Bill tick (aside from his hatred of the Irish).
The finale also felt anti-climactic. It was obvious there was going to be some sort of showdown between Amsterdam and Bill, but their actual fight lacked excitement.
Also despite the attention to period detail, several flaws have been pointed out by people.

Its a good movie which DDL absolutely carries. If he isnt in it then it becomes pretty boring but his Bill the Butcher is so screen chewing in every scene hes in its impossible to not be engrossed in his character.
This is a beautiful 6 min montage of his character and the story.

A-
I think it's great. It could never live up to its DDL, Leo, & Marty hype though.

Never been a fan, but it’s due for another watch soon.
I thought DiCaprio was miscast and the direction in the final third feels like it could’ve been done by anyone, which is disappointing considering it was Martin-frickin-Scorsese.

DiCaprio is too pretty for the role, but he's a good enough actor to make it work. Diaz is painfully distracting no matter how many times I see it. Still much more to appreciate than dislike about it, though. One of Scorsese's best.

Loved Daniel Day Lewis; DeCaprio was okay; Dias was horrid. Too long and went of the rails a few times.

Just watched it again last night. DDL and the set design are excellent, but it is a bit slow and unfocused. The ending turns into It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World or something with all this stuff going down at once, complete with borderline campy battles.
