American audiences made this crap the highest grossing film of the year! Jim Carrey plus famous story plus holiday release date = guaranteed box office success

It's still better than The Cat in the Hat. I was gonna say the same thing. I actually don't mind it, I think Jim Carrey was a pretty good choice, dunno who could have been better for the role at the time. Maybe Will Ferrell?

Wow, I didn't know it was the highest-grossing movie of that year. It was actually Mission Impossible 2 for the year 2000. But I think it was the top grossing movie in America.

Wow, I didn't know it was the highest-grossing movie of that year. No surprise, Carrey was probably the biggest comedy star at the time.

Leonard Maltin Movie Guide Review:
How The Grinch Stole Christmas (2000) - 1.5 out of 4 stars
"Cheerless bastardization of the beloved children's book by Dr. Seuss about a dastardly creature's attempt to rob Whoville of its yuletide holiday. Carrey is good, but the film is loud and cluttered, losing all the charm of the sweet, simple source material. Only good songs are holdovers from the vastly superior 1966 animated TV special. Rick Baker and Gail Ryan won Oscars for Best Makeup. Full title is DR. SEUSS' HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS. Later a Broadway musical. Bah, humbug!"

I don’t really get the hate for this movie. Yeah maybe the Grinch’s backstory doesn’t explain why he hates Christmas and is a dumb backstory, but everyone gives a really great performance if you ask me. It’s also better than the recent Grinch *looks at the Grinch 2018 with disgust*

I never even watched this trash. The cartoon was the best adaption so no reason to mess with any of the later stuff.

The makeup work spearheaded by the incomparable Rick Baker on Jim Carrey and the cast was very good and they won an Oscar for it. I also didn't like the film's cinematography. For some reason, Ron Howard chose to make Whoville look dark in a Tim Burton-esque way. My problems most deal with the writing and characterization. It had too much humor and wasn't sincere enough.

They use this movie and not the original Grinch cartoon when they make those 'Choose 3' Christmas movie memes. They shouldn't.

The movie works for me, mostly due to the art direction, make-up, atmosphere and Jim Carrey. It has many moments that are genuinely hilarious. This is not the original TV version and it isn't suppose to be. It is a bombastic, silly and fun Christmas movie and it works as it's own thing.
My main gripe with the movie is The Grinch backstory.

It’s also better than the recent Grinch *looks at the Grinch 2018 with disgust* It does explain why he hates Christmas though. It is because he connects Christmas with the traumatic event in school. The reason it doesn't work well is because he is already shown to be mean right from "birth."

It's a movie that should never have been made ... they took a perfect little half hour diamond of a film and blew it up .. literally ! Destroyed the charm and warmth and humor of the original !

Were you familiar with the book before seeing the film or the TV show ?
